Bensenville is a town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 5,521 at the 2010 census. Bensenville is part of the Springfield–Highland Heights Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was founded in 1871 as a station on the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad. It was named for Danish immigrant Ole Hansen Bensen (1811-1872), who had arrived in America in 1849 to work on the Erie Canal project. In 1862, Bensenville doubled as an important military staging post during the American Civil War on the banks of the White River. The town grew rapidly after it became one of several townships that were organized from portions of McLean County by General George Armstrong Custer when he took command of Union forces during the Battle of Fallen Timbers in July 1863. Afterward, many residents moved to nearby Arlington Heights and Lombard because they found new opportunities there. In 1916, Bensenville became one of five townships within Mclean County that were merged into Park Ridge Township; however, it retained its own government and school system until 1978. That year, Park Ridge Township merged with other township municipalities to form Highland Heights Township; however, Highland Heights retained its own government and school system until 2003. Bensenville has been home to several businesses over its history: First National Bank (1901-2002), JCPenney (1902-2006), Sears Roebuck & Co.(1914-1976) and Kmart (1984-2005). A major shopping center opened near Bensenville in 2001 called The Mall at Elmhurst which served as both a retail attraction as well as an educational resource for students from Park Ridge Elementary School throughthe High School level. In 2006 Synergy HealthCare Corporation announced plans to open a medical office complex adjacent to their existing hospital located off I-355 just north of I-670/I-290 exit 4A known locally as "The Crossing". This development would have added 375 jobs across 12 storefronts inside Synergy's previously vacant space next door to their current hospital!
Bensenville was founded in 1836 by John Bensen and his wife Sarah. The town grew rapidly due to the railroad industry and its location on the west bank of the Illinois River. By 1860, Bensenville had over 1,500 residents. The town experienced a boom during the late 19th century thanks to land speculation and agriculture. However, during the 1960s and 1970s, Bensenville declined as a result of development in nearby Carbondale and other areas. In recent years, however, Bensenville has seen an increase in population due to new construction along University Avenue and improvements made to its infrastructure including a new library, police department, and city hall.
