Bensenville is a small town in Illinois, located about 25 miles west of Chicago. The population was 9,563 at the 2010 census. Bensenville is home to the Illinois State Fairgrounds and multiple shopping centers including the Sears Centre. The first settler in what is now Bensenville was David Hinton. He built a cabin on the east side of present day street Pleasanton Road in 1847. A year later he moved his family to what is now northwest corner of Erie Street and Wabash Avenue, where they set up a farmstead that remained in operation until 1901. Hinton's son, Hiram Bensen, also built a cabin in this area and named it after his father-in-law's birthplace – Cedar Rapids, Iowa – which he had visited as a child. In 1868 Hiram married Emma Spalding, daughter of John C., Jr., proprietor of the First National Bank near present day Civic Center Drive and Elm Street. They raised four children: Harry (1869-1951), Lois (1871-1956), Edwin (1875-1964) and Edith (1877-1960). In 1898 David Hilbert bought land adjoining his father's farm on Erie Street from John C,. Jr.. Hilbert began building an experimental windmill there which functioned for only six months before it caught fire; however Hilbert did not lose faith in its potential so he continued to work on it even though repairs took longer than expected due to damage done by heavy rains during winter months. This mill became known as "Hilbert's Mill". On May 5th 1902 Hilbert donated $10,000 towards construction ofthe first high school in Lower Township when trustees agreed to merge their two schools into one campus under the name "Bensenville High School" with Mr. Clarence Decker as Principal; however no buildings were erected until 1906 because money was tight due to World War I hostilities ↑ In 1907 Mrs."Minnie" Kelley donated half acre westside lot at 3609 N Clark St for use as Girls' Industrial School for Girls ↑ In 1912 Rev Elisha Davenport called meetings for village Improvement Society & organized purchase of lots along NW edge of village for new church & Village Hall ↑ In 1916Rev Gertrude Skenazy organized Ladies' Auxiliary w/help from Women's Club ↑ Mrs.�Fannie�Davenport organized Mothers’ Association w/help from Women’s Club ↑ In 1928 Rufus Fenton purchased northeast corner site from Jerome Kimmel & Elizabeth Kapp
