The town contains several noteworthy landmarks: John F Kennedy Presidential Library & Museum (opened in 1988), Ladd-Peebles Mall (opened in 1987), Old Main School District No./High School Building (opened in 1925), Christmastime Parade (held every December since 1957), Stonington Park Golf Course & Visitors Center (opened in 2006), and Lake Michigan Boulevard beachfront park which features a restaurant/bar/lawncare complex called Mazza's Italian Grill & Cafe on one side and two tennis courts on the other side adjacent to Bilgewater Marina - both properties were developed by developer Angelo Mazza Jr..

Bensenville is a small town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,569 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first settler in Bensenville was David Hockaday who arrived in 1837. A post office called Bensenville was established in 1841, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. In 1851, John Jacob Astor purchased land north of present-day Bensenville from David Hockaday for $10 per acre. He built a house on what is now the corner of Wabash and Brown streets and named it Astoria Studios after his American actress mother, Emmy (née German) Astor. TheAstors produced many dramatic productions including "The Belle of Bensenville" (1860), "The Great Northern Express" (1867), "Aida" (1911), "The Gilded Age" (1920), "As You Like It" (1925) and "Hamlet" (1929). In 1865, General George Armstrong Custer's forces were retreating through Mclean County after their defeat at Little Big Horn and destroyed much property along the way. Many people took refuge on Custer's farm east of present-day Bensenville; among them were five families who lived near where Pohlman Park now stands: four from Germany and one from Austria-Hungary. Aftermath of battle left many dead or missing, most likely transported by wagon train to Fort Kearney off the Nebraska side of the Missouri River northwest of Omaha. In 1889 Isaac Singer bought 160 acres north of present day Bensenville from Apalachicola Railroad Co., developer forerunner to Chicago & Northwestern Railway Company which he renamed Singer Land & Manufacturing Company Incorporated with headquarters located on Elmhurst Avenue between Clark Street and Roosevelt Road east ofpresent day Lombard Street SouthsicilyAmericanorthoftheMissouriRiverwestofOmaha
