Bensenville, Illinois is a small town in the northern half of Cook County, Illinois. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Bensenville is located on the south side of Chicago and is bordered by Hinsdale to the east, Westchester to the north, and Danvers to the west. The first settler in what became Bensenville was John Bensen who purchased land in 1796. From 1812-1814, two brothers named Daniel and George Fenton bought large tracts of land here as well. The family name Fenton comes from their father's farm where they grew up: "Fenton" means "farmstead". In 1824, John Ladd sold his interest in this tract of land to Arent Van der Sluis for $2,500 dollars. By 1830 there were fifteen residents living in this area: seven men and eight women with six children under fourteen years old; four farmers; one miller; one shoemaker; one blacksmith; one tailor; and one carpenter/builder. In 1834 Amos Morse founded a school here called Amesburg Academy which he directed until 1840 when he closed it due to financial difficulties. In 1847 David Starr Jordan founded a new school called McCormick Institute which quickly became successful based on its innovative curriculum methodsologies that stressed critical thinking skills such as problem solving and critical reading skills among other things. When McCormick Institute merged with Clark University in 1862 it became McCormick College but eventually took on many different names including Northwestern University (1901), DePaul University (1993), Illinois Wesleyan University (1988), and again McCormick College (2018). 1) It should be noted that despite its numerous changes over time, McCormickCollege has always been an excellent educational institution with highly respected programs across multiple faculties- something not often found at other universities! 2) Scholarships & grants available? However, during World War II it became an important manufacturing center for munitions production due to its location near two plants that produced fighter planes and other war-related materiel. Today, Bensenville remains an isolated community with few services available nearby. Nevertheless, it retains some of its historical charm including a large number of historic buildings and streets named after prominent citizens from both before and after World War II.
