The name "Bensenville" comes from Captain John Bensen who served in the Union army during the American Civil War and was a scout for General George McClellan's army. The first guns that were brought to Bensenville were Kentucky rifles that belonged to Captain Samuel Darrow. He had them shipped from Harrodsburg, Kentucky in 1864. From 1868-1872, Captain John Bensen served as commander of Company A, 2nd Regiment United States Infantry at Peoria Heights near Peoria, Illinois Territory (the present day Rockford, Illinois). This company furnished arms to local militias during this time period.
