In 1892, the first handgun was patented in Bensenville. The rifle that became known as the “Bensenville Rifle” was designed by John T. Caldwell and manufactured by William Chapman & Sons. It was a 12-gauge muzzleloader with a 5 1/2 inch barrel and a 20-round magazine.
Bensenville is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 14,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago–Naperville–Joliet metropolitan area. Bensenville's ZIP code is 60514. The first people to live in what is now Bensenville were Native Americans who hunted and gathered plantains and other natural resources near what is now Wabash Avenue. In 1836, Samuel H. Bensen purchased of land from the Wabash Band of Chippewa Indians for $1 per acre ($20/km²). The community name comes from John A. Bensen, a French Canadian merchant who operated a store in nearby Aurora at the junction of Kedzie and Oak Streets from 1839 to 1861. He named his new town after his brother-in-law, George Washington Carver, who had settled in Aurora about 1825. In 1865, David Leland bought of land east of present day Bensenville from three brothers—John Pogue (1796-1875), Nicholas Pogue (1801-1872) and Isaac Aschheim (1807-1877)—for $1 per acre ($8/km²). The Pogue family donated most of their holdings to the village when they sold it to the government in 1898; however, some parcels remained with the family until 1973 when they were conveyed to Village Trustees vowing not sell them again until all assets had been inventoried and property valuation could be made public In 1896 James Fenton donated , which became known as Fenton Park after him . After many years comprising mostly farms or undeveloped woods on each side of Kedzie Boulevard between Vinegar Road and Manor Road (), developers began purchasing parcels southward along Kedzie Boulevard from Dearborn Street on one side and Ogden Avenue on the other so that they would have something contiguous to build upon while also developing commerce within walking distance for both residents and businesses . Development slowed down due to Great Depression conditions but resumed following World War II when demand for housing increased as people moved intoChicago suburbs during wartime jobs opportunities In 1951 developer Milton Glickman developed calls "The Lakes" () immediately north thereof across Kedzie Boulevard from Dearborn Street onto Lake Michigan without ever putting anything up himself (). This development became home to Sears Roebuck & Co., Jannus Corporation (), Ford Motor Company (), stills American Eagle Outfitters () after it opened its first store there in 1957 (). Other major retailers that have graced this corner over time include Sears Holdings Corporation (), Dick's Sporting Goods (), Macy's Inc., Kohl's Department Stores (), Dunham’s Barbecue Company () etc.) Today Bensenville has more than 50 restaurants including several major chains as well as several smaller ones making it an extremely diverse retail environment with something for everyone. Bensenville is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 2,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The name "Bensenville" is derived from John Bensen and his family's farmstead on the east side of the village. Bensenville was founded in 1848 by John Bensen and his brother-in-law Samuel Turner as a small community on the eastern edge of what is now Lakeview Park. In 1855, the village became an incorporated municipality with a population of 1,200; it remained so until 1959 when it merged with neighboring Cook County to form the present city of Chicago. The original settlers were farmers who began to arrive in droves following settlement of what is now Chicago during the mid-19th century. By 1860, there were over 100 residents living in Bensenville; by 1870, there were 300 residents and by 1880, 400 residents had arrived. During this time period many new businesses were established in Bensenville including Jardine & McDonough lumber yards and Wessels bakery/grocery store which still stands today within walking distance of central business district (CBD) neighborhoods such as Eighty-fourth Street and State Street. In 1892, Jardine & McDonough sent their president John Fenton to open up a feed mill in nearby Elmhurst which would provide much needed jobs for local farmers during times of economic recession caused by America's depression years later that year; however due to high competition from other mills Fenton decided not to build a plant but instead opened an office building adjacent to his millsite that remains extant today as One Michigan Avenue - one block west of current Northwestern University's Law School Campus across First Avenue near 60th Street). This event marked another milestone for early 20th century Bensenville as it led directly to expansion into some adjacent neighbourhoods including Homan Square NE just south of current day US Highway 47/I-294 (now Kedzie Boulevard), formerly known as Elmhurst Gardens before being renamed Homan Square after then Mayor George Homan rezoning portions thereof in order to create more commercial areas adjacent thereto – annexing much older properties along Kedzie Boulevard between 59th street (northwest corner) and 62nd street (southwest corner) making this once rural area within downtownChicago Now home to some very high profile developments such as Northwestern Mutual Tower located on Kedzie Boulevard immediately east thereof between 60thStreetand 61stStreetand Sears Tower located on State Street between 57thStreeto its west bank just north thereof between Jackson599rdStreeto Union Station
Bensenville, Illinois was founded in 1837 by John Bensen and his wife Nancy. The community is named for Samuel Jennings Bensen, a settler who contributed $2,000 to the town's development. The first store opened in 1838. In 1848, the town became a part of the Decatur Township government. In 1870, the township was divided into two districts: the north district and the south district. The south district was annexed by Chicago in 1903.
