The area now known as Bensenville was first settled by Germans in the early 1800s. In 1834, John Jacob Astor founded the Astoria Ferry Company in what is now Albany, New York and transported goods to and from his fur trading post in what is now central Bensenville. This service helped to connect Albany with Chicago and other markets. During the American Civil War (1861-1865), Bensenville served as an important military depot for Union forces fighting against Confederate forces. In 1865, General James Halleck ordered all German-owned businesses in Springfield closed because of their support of the Confederacy. This action caused great economic hardship for many residents of Bensenville. Over time, some German-owned businesses reopened but most remained closed until after World War II when they were reacquainted with American society and began to reopen again under new names. Today, Bensenville has a proud cultural heritage that includes its own annual Oktoberfest celebration and numerous cultural events throughout the year including Symphony on Main Street or "Theatre on Main" which features classical music performances from Illinois State University's Orchestra; Folklore Day; Artisan Cheese Show; Pumpkin Festival; Handcar Races/Quilt Show/Festival; Dog Days Festival ; Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony; Irish Famine Heritage Museum open Saturdays 9am – 5pm Admission free (closed Mondays) For more information please visit www.benvenevilleilinoisgovtuseumorg
