Bensenville is a small town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 2,475 at the 2000 census. Bensenville is part of the Chicago metropolitan area and is located about 15 miles (24 km) north of downtown Chicago. It is bordered by Northwest Side to the south and east, South Shore to the north and west, and Archer Heights to the northwest. The first settlers in what would become Bensenville were Irish immigrants who came there in 1848 from County Limerick on the western shore of Lough Corrib. They cleared land and built homes close to where they lived until 1889 when they sold their holdings to an Englishman named Arthur Groombridge. He divided the town into blocks and began marketing it as a place for people who wanted privacy while living near downtown Chicago. In 1896 Groombridge sold his share to John Hynes, who developed it further into a city block with streets that run east-west and north-south. By 1924 all of Hynes' blocks had been purchased by George Wernick Sr., who made it his home until he died in 1941. In 1957 Harry Sarnoff bought most of Wernick's shares, making him one of the largest landowners in Bensenville history. After selling his interest in Bensenville through two sales in 1978 and 1984 he retired from farming but continued to live there full time as a property owner until his death on December 3, 1990 at age 87 years old. One family member continues this tradition today - Harry's son George Sarnoff Jr., also a property owner and operator with over 100 acres (40 ha) land adjacent to Bensenville). George Sarnoff Jr.'s wife Lori drives her four children around town every day playing catch on her lawn; she has been doing so since she was 9 years old!
