Ammo history in Bensenville, Illinois began with the first shot fired from a cannon in the town on November 5, 1833. The event that started the town’s Ammunition industry was when Captain James H. Ketchum of the United States Navy caliber twelve cannon shot an effigy of a giant tortoise off of Point Pelee lighthouse tower to celebrate America’s Independence Day. The shell that resulted from this firing killed two small birds and Wm. Fenton, a resident of nearby Orland Park caused $5 worth of damage to one of Ketchum’s cannons while he was taking aim at the target. Since then, Bensenville has been home to more than its share of ammunition companies and businesses including Armour & Company (1902-1981), Winchester Repeating Arms Co.(1896-1986), Browning Machine guns Incorporated(1924-2007), as well as numerous gunsmith shops and museums located throughout the community. Some notable products made by these businesses include: Winchester Model 1886 rifle cartridges (the ancestor for today’s .308 Winchester rounds), Browning Automatic Rifle rounds (the precursor for today’s 9mm handgun rounds), Remington 870 shotgun shells, and many other types of firearms rounds and projectiles. Today, some local residents continue to produce munitions such as hand grenades and artillery shells using old military equipment or parts scavenged from broken down vehicles or warehouses; however, most ammunition production within Bensenville now comes from commercial sources such as Glocksand Sig Sauer pistols manufactured by Smith&Wesson Firearms Corporation.

Additionally, many locals volunteered their services to serve in various theater commands during the war. As part of his efforts to commemorate wartime memories throughout Illinois, Governor Bruce Rauner declared May 15th “George Bensen Day” in honor of this community’s contribution to national defense. Today, much like when it first arrived in 1841, Bensenville remains an agricultural community that depends heavily on its’ farmland for food and other needs. Most shell cases were simply too small even at those modest velocities not only reducing wound exposure but also defeating any armour plating (and probably allowing infantrymen greater mobility) this allowed field commanders access not onlyto large numbers (largely trained militia) but also higher casualty rates than with earlier munitions types where even close range engagements were extremely difficult…read more
