The name "Bensenville" derives from Nicholas Bensen, who bought land on the east side of the Chicago River in 1847 and founded what became Bensenville Township. In 1856, Wm. H. Barden purchased one-half of the township from Nicholas Bensen and renamed it after him. The Village of Bensenville was organized on February 15, 1907 by an act of the General Assembly through which villages were formed in Cook County to provide better government for residents and to encourage development within their boundaries. At its incorporation all that now makes up Bensenville were landowned by George Prentice & Sons Feeder Company Limited (later Crocker-Prentice). In 1916, as World War I began to rage around the world, American soldiers arrived in Europe to fight for their country during what would be known as The Great War. Many soldiers brought home money they had earned while fighting overseas and invested this money into businesses located in downtown Chicago such as Sears Roebuck and J&L Harvester Co., creating jobs for local citizens who helped run these companies or built them into successful enterprises over time. One such business owner was Harry Aiken who started his own grocery store on Michigan Avenue where he sold food products door-to-door until he opened his first store at 10th Street and Kedzie Avenue in 1922 when stores started opening up all over town because of prohibition laws prohibiting sales to alcohol Imperial Coffee had been serving our customers since 1915 with no problems until April 16 1915 when two agents from the Alcoholic Beverage Control Administration showed up at his store with a search warrant because they believed he was selling liquor! After trying unsuccessfully to sell coffee without selling liquor they took away both items from his inventory! This experience taught Aiken that Prohibition could not be kept alive forever so he decided to open a store specifically for wine! Empirewine continued operations under new ownership until 1949 when it closed due to budget cuts caused by rising prices for gasoline which made transportation more expensive than ever before!
