During World War I, Belvidere served as an airfield for American Expeditionary Forces (AEF) Ninth Air Force Base No. 1; Partisan activities quickly destroyed many civilian buildings after the war ended The population declined rapidly following World War II as manufacturing jobs moved away and suburban development took root. However, growth resumed after passage of the National Voter Registration Act (NVRA) in 1965 which made voting easier and more accessible to minority groups In 2000, BELVIDERE became one of twenty cities selected as finalists for America's Next Great City Award; they were honored with a $100K award along with other finalists including Brooklyn (New York), Miami Beach (Miami), Oakland(Oakland California), Washington D C., San Francisco (San Francisco), Memphis (Memphis Tennessee), Providence RI & Worcester MA respectively

In 1924, Belvidere became one of 10 towns in McLean County when it was created from parts of Cook County. At that time, it had a population of only 1,000 people and included only three buildings: a courthouse (1896), an elementary school (1912), and a Methodist church (1924). However, over time Belvideere's population has grown significantly: by 1990 it had reached 4,000 people; by 2000 it had reached 5,200 people. Today Belvidere is known for its significant role in American history – its citizens have played key roles in both World Wars I and II as well as the civil rights movement – as well as its unique architecture which includes examples of Greek Revival and Victorian-era architecture
