Gun lights have a long and varied history in Belvidere, Illinois. They were first invented in 1876 by George Stephenson, who designed the first electric car. In 1911, pistol light became an official police insignia in Illinois. The first gun light shop was opened in 1922 in Chicago by J.C. Higgins & Sons. It is now called the Higgins Armory Museum and is open to the public on weekdays from 9am to 4pm from April through November. In 1934, Belvidere became the third city in Illinois to have a City Hall with a gun safe for storage of firearms. Firearms ordinances were passed that year establishing regulations governing handguns and ammunition sales within the city limits of Belvidere. On July 1, 1937, Mayor Aiken vetoed a bill which would have allowed handgun possession by persons over 21 years old without having an identification card or having been fingerprinted previously (this law still applies today). Gun Light Manufacturing Company was founded on December 8th of that year at 5015 S Maple Street in Belvidere by Abe Ziegler and Les Ligonier with designs executed by Harry Erfurt of Holland Patent No 2,854,272 (now owned by BAE Systems North America). The company’s products include pistols and revolvers chambered for all kinds of rounds including both shot rounds and air-soft pellets. The company continued production until 1951 when it closed its doors due to financial difficulties caused by World War II rationing policies implemented within the United States military forces during the war time period (See: History Of American Firearms Industry). During this time period other companies such as Herstal produced Heckler & Koch weapons under license from Ziegler & Ligonier also producing guns under their own name as well as other firearms manufacturers throughout America including Winchester Repeating Arms Company which produces Model 1903 rifles known as “The Winchester Rifle” today among others examples confirming thatBelvidere had at one point multiple firearm manufactures operating here simultaneously during this time period despite only having one City Hall at this point). The town also manufactures some items such as corn dusters and paper products. Belvidere is located just west of Interstate 44, which links it with major metropolitan areas in Iowa and Missouri along the eastern border of Illinois

The first settlers of Belvidere were farmers who arrived in 1836 from New England. In 1846, the Western Union Telegraph Company established a station in Belvidere and began to serve the local community with telegraph messages. The town's first post office was established on December 2, 1847. Belvidere grew rapidly due to its strategic location between Carbondale and Elgin and its access to nearby roads and railroads. By 1870, it had acquired a full-time school system and an enlarged hospital with medical supplies and equipment. In 1886, the town was named in honor of General Ulysses S. Grant because he had given assurance that military assistance would be available if needed during the American Civil War. The towns growth did not stop when World War I ended; instead, businesses increased production as war production increased demand for goods produced by Belvidere residents such as flour and cotton products. After World War II, many small businesses closed or went out of business as technology changed so much that manufacturing became more important than ever before for many small towns across America. In recent years there has been a trend towards revitalization in Belvidere; changes have included new housing developments replacing older buildings, adding restaurants and stores onto downtown streetscape additions (a “town square”), installation of sidewalks on high streets throughout the community center areas which once served primarily as parking lots for local businesses (/ formerly residential), construction of a new library/community center complex on one half block east of First Street near Cass Avenue / this project having received overwhelming support from citizens / staff over several months ago
