It is the namesake of Bellwood Cemetery, which covers 8 square miles and has 9 burial plots for residents of Bellwood and its surrounding communities. The town was first settled by German immigrants in 1871. The name "Bellwood" is from the Iroquois word "bēlwōdĕ'a", meaning "place where trees grow." The town was founded on a small stream called Clear Brook about two miles (3 km) east of present-day Bellwood. By 1871, the area had grown to include what are now the towns of Clearbrook and neighboring West Chicago Heights. In 1881, Jesse Latham donated land to the village of Plainfield east ofpresent-day Plainfield to be used as a public school lot. A new post office was established at Plainfield in 1883 and named for Latham; it remained in operation until 1906. In 1905, John Fenton purchased 2,000 acres (8 km2) northwest of Bellwoods original site fromvorp Brothers Land Company for $10 per acre ($Today: $). He began developing this land into what is now known as Fenton Parkland; part of it still remains undeveloped today. In 1916, Lisle Prentice donated land north of present-day Bellwoods Village limits to become an open space designated for public use; it remains unleased today and is known colloquially as 'Prentice Fields'. In 1923, Harry Niles donated property south of present-day Bellefontaine Road to become an open space designated for public use; it remains unleased today and is known colloquially as 'Niles Field'. In 1951, Irving Davidoff donated land northeast of Bellefontaine Road to become an open space designated for public use; it remains unleased today and is known colloquially as 'Davidoffs Field'. On July 1st 1959 Divine Goodyear bought 3/4 mile (.5 km) southwest corner parcel from Harry Niles with intent to develop it into a community park with shopping mall potentialities including housing development on one side only - later renamed Goodyear Park! Bellefontaine Road became busy with traffic during rush hour due mainly to Goodyears Shopping Center which sat on that block between Bellefontaine Rd./Fenton Rd./Goodyear Blvd./Everett Rd.; shoppers would drive down Belleville Rd./Fenton Rd., turn left onto Goodyear Blvd., then continue driving NW on Everett Rd., turning right onto Belleville Rd./Fenton Dr., continuing their journey home without ever having stopped at Belleville RD/Fenton Dr.- henceforth called Bellefontaine Shopping Mall! This situation continued until 1999 when Goodman's closed shop resulted in major traffic backups caused by people trying to go home while still able to buy items! Bellwood was founded in 1847 by the Reverend George H. Bell and his wife, Sarah A. Calkins. The town was named after a mill that had been erected on the same location by General John Bell in 1836. The first store opened in 1850 and the first post office in 1852. In 1860, the Bellwoods built a wood-frame school house which served as their central business district for many years until it was replaced in 1925 by a new brick building. The town experienced rapid growth from its founding until the early 20th century when it lost much of its population to migration or other factors such as prohibitionism. However, during this time period, Bellwood became known for its wide variety of cultures and products which helped make it one of Illinois' most diverse communities. In 1916, the town voted to become an independent city; however, this decision later met with resistance from some residents who felt that they were being left behind while other towns grew more prosperous. By 1920, however, all but two of Bellwood's businesses had been purchased by neighboring municipalities and the city's population had stabilized at around 2,000 residents. In 1930, Mayor Wm Gmelin dedicated a park within walking distance of downtown which quickly became popular among locals and visitors alike due to its beauty and easy access to local sports and activities.
