Bellwood is a small, rural town in Cook County, Illinois. It was founded in 1868 by General James Bell and his family. The community was named for General George Armstrong Custer who died in 1876 during the Dakota War. In 1861, when Illinois entered the American Civil War, General James Bell enlisted in the Union Army as a private. He rose to the rank of colonel and served with distinction during the war. In 1865, he decided to secede from the United States and joined forces with Kansas’s Confederate forces. After the war ended, General Bell returned to Illinois and resumed his political career. In 1871, he became mayor of Bellwood and held that position until 1880. During this time, Bellwood experienced several incidents which led to its nickname of "The Wild West Village". One such incident happened on November 3rd, 1872 when three men were shot at close range outside the town hall. Three days later another man was killed while walking home from work; two days after that another man was shot dead while trying to cross a street; on December 2nd two farmers were shooting at game near their farm when one of them was hit by an arrow; on January 10th three men were found guilty of vagrancy and took five weeks imprisonment; on February 4th local children heard gunshots being fired in nearby woods and ran into town for safety. On March 15th local residents learned that Confederate troops had landed at Fort Dearborn (now Chicago) and began looting stores within reach of their homes; on April 9th a group of men armed with shotguns raided a grocery store in nearby Peoria Heights without causing any damage or injuries; four days later similar raids occurred at stores in neighboring villages but no injuries were reported. On May 5th guns opened fire upon crowds gathered outside City Hall after Mayor Bell proposed using it as shelter during an autumn storm; five months later another gun battle erupted between Union troops stationed inside and outlying buildings during a general strike (a series of labor protests).
