Bellwood, Illinois is a small town located in the northwest corner of Cook County, Illinois. The population was 5,839 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The Bellwood community originated around 1892 when a group of farmers in that area decided to join together to form a local Improvement Association. The first building in what is now Bellwood was built on the site of an old mill. In 1915, industrialists John Duesenberg and his brother Samuel bought the property and started building what would become one of Bulls Eye optical stores. It wasn't until 1957 that the store moved its headquarters from Milwaukee to central Illinois where it still operates today under different name and banner. During World War II, many people who lived in or near central Illinois came north for work during shortages caused by war production.[1] One such person was Harry Weinstock who opened up two optical stores in south suburban Bloomington (now renamed Prospect Heights). Weinstock's success led him to open other optical stores throughout central Illinois as well as across America[2]. Eventually, he closed all his stores except one in east Aurora which continued operations until 1984. In 1973, three brothers – Robert Hynes, Dick Hynes and Tom Juhl – founded Juhl Optical Incorporated (JOI), which became one of the largest optical retailers in North America thanks to its purchase of several smaller businesses[3]. JOI continued expanding into new markets including South Africa[4], Canada[5], Mexico[6] and Japan[7]. In 2006, Dick Hynes passed away after a long battle with cancer; his son Robert took over management duties at JOI. In January 2007, Bob Hynes' wife Donna died suddenly after years of health issues; her husband succeeded her as CEO at JOI [8]. The store was located on the corner of 30th Street and Second Avenue in downtown Bellwood. The store specialized in selling optical equipment, including telescopes, binoculars, microscopes, and other scientific instruments. In 1924, the store moved to its current location on State Street in central Bellwood. The store continued to sell optical equipment until it closed its doors for good in 1984.

Bellwood was founded in 1881 by John Bigham and others as a small community on the banks of the Sangamon River. In 1914, it became a city and soon developed into one of the most successful communities in Johnson County. The building boom that followed the onset of World War II led to an increase in population and property values; today, Bellwood remains a middle-class community with significant amenities and businesses. The history of Bellwood begins with John Bigham. A self-taught surveyor, Bigham believed that farming could be done better on smaller plots than large farms where land was shared among many families. He arrived in 1881 in a wagon train from nearby Vandalia to found his new community on the banks of the Sangamon River. At first, only five people lived there: Bigham himself, his wife Sarah (née Merrill), their two children John and Anna (later Mrs. Hines), and their friend George Wright (later Mr. Hines). Over time, additional family members moved into Bellwood: Anna's parents moved to Bellwood from Moline when she was five years old; John's older brother Alfred moved there when he turned eighteen; Sarah's sister Emma came to live with them after her marriage; and finally George's wife Louise went overland from Chicago to join them after they were married in 1885. Although initially un Durantian about technical education for women - given that women did not then enjoy full citizenship or rights within society - Sarah soon persuaded her husband to allow girls vocational training so that they could carry out important household tasks such as cooking and cleaning for their growing families while also receiving an education which would give them opportunities for advancement both professionally and academically should they choose to pursue such things beyond home lifeNext came additions designed specifically for female use: a library/theatre/generating house/garage/dressing room complex known as 'the Coles'. This initial village had more than adequate facilities for all but one activity: agriculture! No matter how many times we tell stories about those early days we never forget how much utility infrastructure we still lack today! As word spread throughout our tiny town about this amazing new development – complete with libraries, movie theaters, grocery stores etc.– everyone wanted access too see what all these fancy features looked like inside! Beardsley taught grade school until 1840 when she moved to Creston, Iowa due to health concerns associated with living close to water suppliesL In 1851, Mr. & Mrs. Wm Halsey purchased land east of present-day Bellwood and began construction on what is now known as the Hawkeye Block House which served as their home and business until they sold it in 1865 to Mr. Enos Huth who later became President of Northwestern University In 1886, John Boudreau brought a new type of electric light bulb to town which helped start a local industry that continues today The community experienced several name changes during its history including Belle Plain (1836), Big Timber (1840), Hickory Grove (1847), Rossville (1853), Thunder Hill (1857) and finally Bellwood (1880). In 1906, after much debate among residents, Bellwood changed its name back to its original nickname of "Hickory Grove."
