John's brother Benjamin bought it from them in 1832 and changed its name to Bellwood after another one of their siblings—a man by that name who had been born in England but raised in America. In 1849, Daniel Webster issued an order providing for all male citizens over eighteen years old to be enrolled in the militia or drafted into service for three years during the Mexican–American War; this led to increased enrollment at Bellwood schools due to men coming home from war with new opportunities and fresh minds looking for education. On October 10, 1861 – days before Abraham Lincoln was elected president – local farmers voted 4-1 not to secede from Illinois due to fears that doing so would provoke federal intervention; however they did arm themselves and store food near Belmont station (then called White Hall) until April 1862 when Confederate General Robert E Lee occupied Champaign County.– Militia Captain James Moultrie ordered all residents west of Carbondale unarmed on April 9th just before Union forces arrived.– On May 3rd Union General Ulysses S Grant entered Champaign County with orders to disarm all males aged 21 or older without express written consent (and executed any who refused). This move effectively ended warfare between Union and Confederate troops withinChampaign County.– Many people believed that Grant's decision was motivated by racism towards Native Americans living among white people.– Some historians believe that Grant might have also been motivated by concerns about possible insurrection by black soldiers if allowed into Champaign County without being disarmed.– On November 5th President Abraham Lincoln issued Executive Order 6662 which provided for slaves within Franklin & Marshall College (the former Dueramte College) to be given freedom on December 1st regardless of whether they had ownership papers or not.-- Aftermath: On December 2nd most slaves were able to leave through various channels including auctions conducted by friends and family members.-- By 1870 most slaves had either been emancipated or sold.-- In 1865 restrictions against slavery were lifted by Congress which gave away more than fifty thousand acres (22%) of land west of Urbana Heights east of State Route 30.-- When Iowa became a state in 1907 Bellwoods residents donated land north/northwest thereof for use as an agricultural college.-- Today much remains unchanged such as bellwoods post office which continues open daily since 1871

Bellwood was a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States when it was incorporated on December 12, 1849. It is located in the eastern part of the city of Chicago and is bordered by the neighborhoods of Englewood to the east, Belmont to the south, and West Side to the west. The population of Bellwood was 1,548 at the 2010 census. The first settler in what is now Bellwood was John Hickey who arrived there on October 10, 1847. Hickey's family moved from Ireland around 1826. In 1840 David Wills settled in what is now Bellwood and his family followed in 1846. The first post office at Bellwood was established on November 3, 1850; it operated under the name "Belvidere." The first school in what is now Bellwood opened on October 10th, 1847 for grades one through four. It was called "Fenway Academy" after President George Washington's estate near Fenway Park (now Symphony Hall). The school closed in 1865 due to lack of enrollment and re-opened as "Belvidere School" with grades five through eight on October 10th 1870. In 1888 a new school building was built for "Belvidere School" which housed grades nine through twelve; this building also served as a church until 1994 when it burned down. Bellwoods original white frame house still stands today next to its original blacksmith shop/carpenter shop which were two stories high with large doorbells that could be heard all over town because they were so loud! There are several other houses that were either torn down or leveled off during development but those are unfortunately gone forever! One particular house that still stands however has been restored and tourneyball diamonds have been put into it which pretty much tells you all you need to know about it!
