By 1860, Bellwood had a school and two churches. In 1865, Bellwood became one of nine towns incorporated into Cook County; it remained an independent municipality until 1959. During World War II, many people from Bellwood served in the military or were drafted. After the war ended, many of those who had served moved back to Bellwood and started businesses again. Bellwood was located in the town of Lemont, Illinois on the border of Sangamon County and Cook County. The first settler in what is now Bellwood was John Pappas, who arrived in 1810. The village was organized on December 12, 1847. The population of Bellwood peaked at 2,611 in 1940 and then decreased to 1,812 by 1960. In 1970, the Bellwoods were merged with neighboring right-of-way Township to form a new township called Lemont Township.
