The first handguns were made from ivory and wood. They were very crude but effective weapons. In 1847, a new company was formed to make handguns. This company became known as the Illinois Armory Company. The new handguns were much better quality and more efficient than the old ones. In 1865, a new gun manufacturer was founded in Bellwood by Samuel Colt and his father-in-law, Nicholas Coltena. This company produced high-quality pistols for the military and law enforcement agencies throughout Illinois and America.
Bellwood, Illinois was founded in 1829 by John Bell and his wife Esther. The town is located on the junction of roads that led to the surrounding mining towns of central Illinois and Northwestern Indiana. The Bellwoods were among the first settlers in what would become Bellwood Township. JohnBell operated a gristmill, cheese factory, wagon wheel shop, blacksmith shop and sawmill in the township until his death in 1872. The belles used their own money to purchase land east of the village for a school and church. They also built a home on White Oak Lane which they called "The Oaks". In 1870, Josephine Ladd became minister at the new Methodist Episcopal Church and she began teaching music classes there from 1871-1877. From this class emerged one of America's most famous female composers - Alma Mater (later Alma Hill). In 1912, Mrs. Bellwood married her second husband - George Parkman Jr., who had been living in New York City since 1906. For many years they resided at 7282 Niles Avenue in Chicago; however, in recent years they have lived closer to their family farmstead at 6985 Niles Ave.. The Parkmans are active members of many churches including St. Peters Lutheran Church & School and First United Methodist Church where Mrs. Parkman officiates as an associate pastoress besides conducting music programs throughout the year.. Bellwood is a small town in central Illinois, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Peoria–Champaign Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was founded in 1836 by Dr. George Bell and his family as a stop on the old road between Peoria and Champaign. The first post office was established in 1837, and the present bell tower was built in 1881. Belwood has been noted for its beautiful countryside setting and rich history. In addition to its belltower, one of the town's most prominent features is its Methodist church, which served as a meetinghouse from 1836 to 1984. Other important landmarks include Bellwoods Cemetery, which contains remains of many local residents who died during the late 19th century; and State Road 434, which runs through town and connects it with neighboring towns such as Urbana and Moline. Belwood has also become known for its annual pumpkin festival, which takes place on October 15th each year since 1988.
The first settlers in Bellwood were the Wright brothers, who arrived in 1837. The town was named for General James K. Polk, who served as president from 1848 to 1853. The first post office was founded in 1848, and it was called Bellwood Post Office. The name change occurred because of a deal that was made by the United States Postal Service with Great Britain. In 1860, the Bellwood Methodist Episcopal Church was built on North Main Street. In 1865, the Union Pacific Railroad linked Bellwood with Chicago and became an important transportation artery throughout Illinois. In 1870, a millinery shop and dyeing plant were built on South Main Street by Mrs. Jane Addams. Mrs. Addams is best known for her philanthropy which included building the George Washington Park in Washington D.C., and funded many other projects such as burying veterans of the American Civil War at Arlington National Cemetery and providing education scholarships at Mount Holyoke college. By 1880,Bellwood had a population of over 100 people and two stores operated inside what is now City Hall Square (later renamed State Capitol Square). A school was opened in 1881 on West Third Street by Miss Sarah Simonsen-Foley; it became known as Northern Illinois Normal School after being moved to its current location in 1914 when Normal University moved from Chicago to DeKalb County, Illinois (now Atlanta). A new library was constructed on First Avenue in 1904 by Drs John Witherspoon & Fenton Stevens; it remains one of downtown IL's most popular tourist destinations today! In 1926, Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company established its headquarters here; this continues to be an important corporate presence within downtown IL ever since! In 1928-29 Northwestern Mutual built what is now the Riverfront Music Hall which quickly became one of downtown IL's most popular tourist attractions! It has been used both for performances and events throughout its history including hosting multiple Presidentsald Heads Of State visits during their respective terms! Bellwood experienced some significant growth during World War II due to both its strategic location within close proximity to major military installations as well as its sizable population size (over 200 people by 1945!). However,Throughout most of the war there was little visible activity taking place outside of bellwoods small businesses – until September 1945 when Operation Overlord began resulting in massive damage/losses across much of northwestern Europe via bombing raids conducted by Nazi Germany! This resulted in large numbers of refugees arriving into Illinois specifically targeting Bellwoods community infrastructure – including numerous homes destroyed or heavily damaged!! After successfully rebuilding followingriegs devastation however, many residents once again returned to their normal livesalbeit with increased security precautions taken!!
