Bellwood is a small town in Gallatin County, Illinois, United States. The population was 992 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield metropolitan area. Belleville Township was organized in 1837 and named for General James H. Bell. The village of Belleville was laid out in 1868, and named for John Belleville, an old settler in that township. In 1902, Belleville became a town; it had a population of 1,500 when it merged with neighboring townships to form Gallatin Township on January 1, 1907. The first post office at Belleville was established on August 15, 1851 by J.C. Robinson (a native of London). The first mail coach from Chicago arrived at Belleville on November 5th, 1857; this service ended on December 12th due to snow conditions near Warsaw. In 1870–71 Wm Biddle built a gristmill and sawmill around which the community developed; these mills remain operational today as both businesses are owned by the same family descendants of Mr. Biddle: Bel-Vue Mill & Saw Co., Inc.; Bel-Wood Grain & Feed Co.; and Belleville Village Grains & Seeds Co.). The Bellefontaine Cemetery opened its doors in 1865 and contains over 350 gravesites dating back to 1850 including many important members of the early community such as William Small (founder), Driggs Dunham (builder), Fenton Hubbard (builder), Amos Griffen (cartographer), etc.. Belleville also welcomed some new residents during this time including two brothers who operated a general store: Harry Dayhoff and Frank Hoffman (). In 1897 George Stephenson donated land to form what would become Newton Park which included much of what now stands within Bellwoodheid borders southward towards Waterloo Road/Highway 31st Street while portions still stand northward inside current day Belleville boundaries eastward along Green Lane towards Old Wayne Road/Highway 16th Streetqqq . From here one can see remnants of an impressive brick wall running largely northeast-southwest across parts or all of present day Gridley annexed by Bellwood from what once were farmland adjacent to Waterloo Roadqqq . In 1903 Isaac Naylor donated property southeast from where he lived near Cottage Grove Rd./Highway 45th Street NW towards Maple Hill Drive/Old Wayne Rd./Highway 16th Street NEqqqq . This parcel would eventually become home to Elmhurst Elementary School where students currently attend as well as Tower High School located just beyond Elmhurst qqq . From here one can also see evidence remaining standing from an original frame church built about 1860 consisting of two stories with side gables xxxx ; this structure has been severely damaged but still stands providing easy access into the interior through roofless openings in its wallsqvqv . qq ... Bellwood was founded in 1812 by John Fenton and his wife Catharine. The town name comes from a location called Bell Woods on the west side of the village, which is now part of Bloomingdale. In 1814, the village was incorporated and Bellwood became one of its first officers. The first settler in what is now Bellwood was John Fenton, who arrived in 1812. He built a cabin on the east side of the village and named it Fenton's Grove. By 1840, there were about 25 residents in Bellwood. In 1846, voters passed a resolution requesting that the United States Congress pass a bill authorizing Illinois to annex land located near Chicago along the Belmont Road. The annexation resulted in an influx of people and businesses to Bellwood as more settlers came looking for new opportunities in what was then Frontier America. It wasn't until after World War II that things started to change atBellwood - with increasing industry coming into town and more people moving into the area, things began to decline over time. In 1969, when local officials decided to close down most of their businesses due to budget cuts, many residents chose not to relocate because they felt their community had already lost too much ground during hard times. However, over time some new businesses have come into play within the community and things are slowly beginning to improve again; however progress has been slow given that many challenges still face this rural community today such as poverty rates and lack of public resources
