The name "Bellwood" is derived from the French word "boule wood", meaning ball or log. The first settler in what is now Bellwood was Manuel Sanchez who arrived in 1837. He and his family were the nucleus of what would become the community's early development. In 1860, John Halsey founded a flour mill in Bellwood and soon began exporting goods to other parts of the country. By 1870, there were six businessesowntown with over 100 employees! In 1879, bellwoodschool was established by Lila and Cornelius Dickey as a school for girls located on Roundabout Street adjacent to their home on Belleview Avenue. Classes commenced that fall and continued until 1928 when it merged with nearby Highland School to form one large school district! Beginning in 1903, a post office called "Belleville" was established at Bellwood; however it closed operations in 1906 upon becoming an incorporated village! In 1916-17, Phebe Carney organized her first annual sewing festival which attracted many visitors from surrounding villages including Belleville and Highfield! The festival continues to this day as one of the most popular events in town! In 1954-55 local boy Bob Kapp set out on an adventure that would change his life forever - he walked Across America!. His progress along Route 66 caught the attention of American Telephone & Telegraph Company (AT&T) who offered him a job working telephone lines across America! After completing his walk he returned home but had learned something else while walking - he wanted to teach people how to walk too!!! This led him eventually into teachingESSchools himself...and that's how we got started today!
