Of this land, (or 99%) consists of forested hills and valleys; (or 1% consists of developed areas). Briefly: Bellwood was founded circa 1847 by Peter Bell with his wife Catharine as their only residence; It soon grew into a small but thriving village situated along what would later become State Road 11/12W;In 1870 became an authorized Town status under IL Constitution #27-1 & passed resolutions ratifying changes made thereto that year; On Nov 15th 1903 its first Post Office opened - Named after GW Carver who donated land for dicitonal building!

Bellwood is a small town in Grays County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,628 at the 2010 census. The first settler in what is now Bellwood was Abram White in 1813. He and his family founded the village of White Settlement on a tract of land that they purchased from the government for $1,000. The village became a part of Grays County when it was organized in 1836. The Bellwood Railroad was built through the community in 1871 and made available to residents by means of a toll gate located at the edge of town. The railway served as an important link between Bellwood and other parts of Grays County until it closed down during World War II. As early as 1840, Amos Cooke had started marketing bellwoods (a type of wild cherry) near present-day Carbondale. By 1850, he had increased his production to such an extent that he began shipping bellwoods around the world. In 1860, he built a millinery shop and home on State Street in Bellwood which remain extant today as one of the few remaining examples from this era with period architecture in Illinois. In 1861–1862 John Acheson purchased some land east of Carbondale and laid out what is now called Acheson Park after him and his wife Mary Ewing Acheson (née Hardwick). This area served as their primary residence until their death in 1923; it remains one of only two residences remaining from this time period in Illinois along with Acheson's mill building still standing today beside its predecessor – both are listed on the National Register of Historic Places . During World War I (1914-1918), over 100 local men contributed their services to various branches within the army or navy without receiving any pay for their work done; these men are often known as "the missing soldiers" because no records exist showing them having returned home safely after serving their country overseas . Some residents who lived near Carbondale during this time also volunteered for military service including Mrs Ruth Gable who raised chickens for troops living nearby while her husband acted as cook; her efforts resulted in dozens or even hundreds eggs being collected each day by soldiers stationed at Belvidere Barracks adjacent to Carbondale High School . After World War I ended there were several changes take place within Grays County including Almonte becoming county seat while White Settlement became part of Carbondale; however, most people continued to reside within Bellwood until recently when cell phone service has become more prevalent throughout much rural America making travel outside difficult if not impossible . Today, many aspects associated with life back then stillexist like regular grocery store presence along State Street complete with pies/pudding every Wednesday night during prohibition days prior to repeal occurring; blacksmith shop/forge still operates daily during summer months producing ironclad swords used by local militia patrols patrolling areas such as Dyersville ; post office which opened November 12th 1870 continues functioning 364 days per year averaging almost 2 ½ hours per day despiteEvolution leading PSTN providers moving up north ; Elmhurst Cemetery & Sinking Creek Baptist Church - both have been preserved within walking distance since original construction date
