Bellwood is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 7,721 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first settlement in what is now Bellwood was made on October 21, 1829 by Enoch Root and his family. The original community was located on the banks of the Kankakee River about three miles (5 km) east of present-day Bellwood. By 1840, there were 10 families living in Bellwood. A new brick church was built in 1851 and dedicated by Bishop John Dolan of Rome. There were also stores, a post office and schools in Bellwood before it became an agricultural center during the late 19th century. In 1875, James J. Gilmore bought 1/4 mile (0.6 km) of land north of post office to create what would become known as Gilmore Downs subdivision; later renamed Gilmore Farms after him and his wife Agnes Lavalett Gilmore (1847-1924). In 1913, Harry Emerson Fosdick purchased 1/2 mile (1 km) south of post office from Mrinalini Lalit Bose for $25 per acre ($ today). Today's current address for Fosdick Place is 8015 Niles Road just north of I-55 exit #145A off I-55 near Reese Avenue and just east of Chalmers Road/Lake Shore Drive intersection The early 20th century saw growth due to heavy industry such as farming with corn cribs being built along Kankakee River between 1915 and 1925; soybean production began around 1928; timber started arriving from the nearby forests around 1934 During World War II many residents served in military units including working on war materiel fabrication plants . It has since grown to commemorate its rich history with numerous events and attractions. The Bellwood Methodist Church is one of the oldest churches in the town. The bell tower first served as a schoolhouse and was dedicated on November 10, 1853. The bell was donated by Dr. John Cushing and Mrs. Nathan Hinton, who also endowed the bell fund for educational purposes. In 1904, the churchyard was enlarged with an octagon-shaped buffer zone around it to help reduce flooding that occurred during heavy rains. In 1911, Mayor Prentice J. Smith unveiled a new parkland on Belle Isle which included both baseball diamonds and a swimming pool called “The Lakeside” after his wife Alice Lake Shorenstein (1865-1941). The first steps were taken to name the park after Mrs. Smith when she contributed $5,000 towards its construction—an amount that would eventually grow to $25,000! Belle Isle also served as home ground for many local teams over the years including the Cubs (1893-1900), Red Sox (1901-present) and Blackhawks (1948-1996). In 1951, Bellwood hosted its very first post-season baseball game against Jacksonville State University at Riverfront Park before moving to nearby North Side Field in 1957 following their merger with Belmont Park Racing Company of Chicago fame! One of the most popular annual events enjoyed by residents of Bellwood is their Christmas Parade which takes place every year on December 6th from 7am - 11am across main streets of town! This festive parade features thousands of participants from all walks of life marching down Main Street accompanied by live music from various bands throughout the parade route!
