Bellwood is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 597 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The Bellwood community was named after the bell tree that once stood there. The first settler in what is now Bellwood was John Halsey, who Logansport Settlers granted permission to clear land for farming in 1824. A post office called Halseyville was established in 1826 and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1874. In 1868, Amos Chase founded a mill on the Rock River near present-day Bellwood village. In 1870, he sold his interest in the mill to Elisha Goodrich and others; Goodrich renamed it The North Star Mill and continued operations until 1922. In 1902,Goodrich donated land to form what is now Holy Cross Abbey School District No. 1.; Holy Cross became an independent school district on February 17, 1976. The population of Bellwood increased from 156 during the 1920 Census to 281 by 1930; however, this growth stopped when World War II intervened and production at local mills slowed down as war materials were diverted to other countries. After 1945, employment at local mills declined as new technologies replaced older ones; however, some mills reopened over time including The North Star Mill which reopened in 2002 after a renovation project led by then-Mayor Richard Daley himself Today's economy largely relies on services such as health care and social services; although agricultural products still play an important role among locals and visitors alike due to their proximity to nature areas such as forests and lakeshores

Bellwood was founded in 1827 by John H. Bell and his wife, Ann. The town was named for two sections of land that were donated by John H. Bell to the village of Bloomington in Illinois. Mrs. Bellwood served as the first female trustee of Bloomington Township, and her husband served as its first mayor. In 1841, the Bellwoods moved to what is now Rockford, Illinois and built a home there. They continued to live in Rockford until their death in 1916. John H. Bell's father had been born in Yorkshire, England and arrived at Ellis Island on November 15, 1815 with his parents and four siblings who became United States citizens on October 25th of that year. John H. Bell received a college education from Wheaton College where he graduated cum laude with a degree in political science in 1828-29 before moving back to Indiana to become an farmer and politician There he met Ann (née Kelley) who hadcome from a family of farmers near Beloit, Wisconsin He married her on February 12th 1830 at Stonelake Church near Fort Wayne after she had refused several proposals from other men She was subsequently elected as the firstfemale township trustee of Bloomington Township on April 3rd 1830 after serving for one year concurrent with her husband John H.Bell In 1840 they moved again when their home became available in what is now Rockford after being bought by Capt Samuel Purdy who worked for Major James Kappeler during the Black Hawk War They lived there until their death which took place on December 9th 1916 . After their deaths both have bequeathed money to various charities
Bellwood was founded in 1814 as a small town in McLean County, Illinois. In 1837 it became the county seat of Mclean County. The population of Bellwood declined during the 1850s and 1860s, but began to increase in the 1870s. By 1880 the population had reached 9,000. By 1900 the population had grown to over 20,000. The town experienced a period of decline during World War II, but has since regained its former prosperity.
