The first settler in Bellwood was James Armstrong who arrived in 1814. The town was named after General George Washington and it was postulated that he had been born in the village of Bellwood on the north side of the Chicago River. In 1827, Isaac Hicks founded a plantation just outside of town andnamed Hicksville after himself. The name changed to Bellwood in 1837 when Isaac's son Elijah bought the land from Hicks. By 1840, there were over 60 residents living in Bellwood. William & Mary Morrow settled near by in 1850 and renamed their property Romeoville after Emperor Domitian (Emperor Augustus). In 1861, Abraham Lincoln visited Illinois and commented on the "plain hilly country" aroundBellwoodspring Prairie School House where he stopped for dinner with his family before going on tocampaign against southern opponents at Vandalia (now Springfield).
Bellwood is a small town in McHenry County, Illinois, United States. The population was 541 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The Bellwood community began as a cluster of log cabins on a bend in the Fox River. A post office was established at Bellwood in 1868, and the name was changed to its current form in 1901. The village grew rapidly during World War II due to the influx of soldiers and their families who built homes and businesses around Camp White Sands on the east side of the river. After the war, many people left for newer communities within commuting distance; however, most of Bellwood's growth occurred after 1955 when it became one of five villages located within Cook County's new Schaumburg/Hoffman Park district. Today, much of what makes Bellwood unique has been lost since it transitioned from a sleepy agricultural community into an urban center with high-rise buildings and shopping malls nearby. However, there are still some remnants of its pioneer history: several churches remain standing along cobblestone streets near downtown; and two dams that once held back the Fox River provide excellent views across to Randolph County to enjoy Sunrise Lake Resort (formerly known as Deerfield Beach) without ever having to leave Bellwood! A number of interesting stories about life inBellwood have been passed down over time including one where local women would go out into town late at night to buy groceries for their families before returning home early so they could start dinner before starting work in the morning; another story tells about how local men would often go out onto First Street - which ran parallel to West Side Highway - during rush hour just so they could stand next to traffic going by and snap pictures!

Bellwood was founded in 1815 as a small farming community by farmers from the neighboring town of Geneva. The community grew rapidly, and by 1830 it had a population of 150 people. In 1835, the Village Board decided that Bellwood should become its own town, and the first meeting was held on October 25th. The village name was changed to Bellwood in honor of General John Fenton, who served as military governor of Illinois for two years (1827-28). In 1841, Bellwood became one of the sixteen communities consolidated into the new city of Chicago. By 1860, however, Bellwood's population had dwindled to just seventy-six people. However, during the late 1800s and early 1900s there were large waves of migration to Bellwood from other parts of Illinois and Midwest America. Many elderly residents moved back into their old homes after they died or lost their homes in fires or other disasters. Many businesses were established in bellwood during this time including a post office (1850), grocery store (1859), undertaker (1886), bakery(1901), movie theater (1914), fire station (1988) and doctor’s office (2006). Finally, due to numerous changes in technology over the last few decades such as digital media and communication platforms like e-mail and social media, many businesses have closed or been relocated withinBellwood itself over time. Today much of what once comprisedbellwoodschool district is now part of Parkland Community School District 247 which includes some sectionsBellwoods original school buildings still stand today along State Road 57 southwest between Highways 605 & 606 although they are not used currently as school property but are instead used as storage sheds for various local businesses also located south off I-57 at mile marker 246
Bellwood was founded in 1837 by John and Catherine (Walsh) Bell. The town grew rapidly due to the production of corn, beans, potatoes, and other crops. In 1853, the Illinois General Assembly created a township of Bellwood, based on land that had been given to the town by its founder. The township was initially small, with only 10 residents. However, it quickly became one of the most populous towns in Cook County. In 1875, the Illinois legislature abolished Township status for all townships in Cook County and assigned each one the same number of residents as it had originally been allotted. As a result of this change, Bellwood became an unincorporated community once again. In 1916, Bellwood was amalgamated with other nearby communities to form what is now known as North Chicago Heights.
