Bellwood is a small town in Cook County, Illinois. The population was 5,869 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first settler in what would become Bellwood was John Ralston in 1827. By the late 1830s, many miles of land had been purchased by settlers and spread out near present-day Bellwood on the banks of the Calumet River. In 1855, three men named Valentine, Daniel Freeman and George Stephenson founded Stephenson's Manufacturing Company on a tract of land they had purchased from Isaac Nesbit. The company manufactured bellowers and other tools used by farmers throughout Illinois and Wisconsin; it remain an important local industry to this day. The community name comes from two early residents: James Buel (died 1830) who donated land for a church and cemetery; and Elias Bell (1802-1875), also a philanthropist, whose home still stands today as one of only two remaining frame buildings in Bellwood. That same year, Elijah Ogden formed an agricultural society with six others to improve relations between black people and white farmers; it continues to operate today as Emanuel farmstead association Incorporated. In 1860, while working on his farm just south of present-day Grayslake Avenue in neighboring Arlington Heights, Abraham Lincoln owned 3 acres (1 km²) adjacent to what would eventually be called "Belle Terre" after his daughter Belle may have seen it while walking her dog there one day in 1868. That property became home to some of Belwood's earliest residents--including future Mayor Pro Tem William Maugham--and continued to be so through much of its history until being sold off for development purposes in 1990. AlthoughBellwood was originally settled primarily for agriculture purposes - corn grain production accounting for most economic activity until well into the 20th century - some industrial development occurred during that time as well including a foundry established by Luther Kilpatrick & Sons which produced firearms until 1907 and later an engine works operated by Humble Oil Corporation until 1956 before finally closing down due to pollution issues in the 1970s.
