Bellwood is a small town in LaGrange County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,752 at the 2010 census. It was named after Alexander Bell, who founded the town in 1836. It is located on the border of LaGrange and Elkhart counties. The first settler in what would become bellwood was George Stephenson, who came to this area in 1837 with his brother John Stephenson. George had started out as a wagon driver for the Erie Canal Company and became interested in agriculture when he took up residence in what would be called Stephenson Township (now part of Bellwood). He built himself a log cabin and began to plant corn and beans on his land which he augmented with hogs, deer, rabbits, ducks, chickens and other livestock over time. In 1838Alexander Bell arrived from Canada with his family and set about building a house on what is now Main Street. He soon realized that he needed more than just one store so he started selling goods door-to-door throughout the township. In 1840 he opened up his own business - The Alexander Bell Store - which soon became an important economic center within the community. By 1850 there were ten businesses situated around Bellwood; four stores full of merchandise destined for marketplaces all around Indiana; two churches; two schools; one brewery - all serving the needs of residents and their families within reason! A very early form of transportation arrived through Mr. Bell's store when horse drawn wagons filled with groceries stopped by each day to pick up passengers coming into town from surrounding farms or villages! This service continued until1890 when electric streetcars replaced horses & wagons as primary means of transportation within our community! As many as seventy people could be accommodated insideMr.'s store at any given time! Mrs.(later)Mrs.(later)Bell also ran her own bakery & grocery store next door from 1890-1910 while her husband operated The Alexander Bell Store until his death in 1943 . After World War II most if not all businesses closed except for three that continue today under new ownership: Mr./Ms.(later)Johnathan(later)Karen (Morrison),Donny(Dixon)and Kathy(Larson).
