Bellwood, Illinois is a small town in the central part of the state of Illinois. It is located on the border of McHenry County and Kane County. The population was 1,493 at the 2010 census. Bellwood is part of the Chicago Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers to Bellwood were two families from New York who came overland in 1819. They named their new community after Dr. John Bell, an American physician and professor at Yale University who had been honoured with an honorary degree by President James K. Polk in 1846. In 1834, John Davenport founded Davenport & Company lumberyard and mill in what is now Old Georgetown Township - he was followed by his son David Davenport and grandson George H. DavenPORT Sr.. In 1881, J foreclosed on debt owed by the father-in-law of George H., Jr., and sold all but 3 acres (1 km²) of land to him for $6,000 cash plus 30 acres (12 ha) of woodland for $5 per acre (2 m²). Mr. Hargrave donated much more land to support farming communities around it: 8 other parcels totaling 102 acres (39 ha) were donated between 1918 and 1925 when he became president of Northwestern Illinois Agricultural Experiment Station; these are now part of Metro Park District #9 south off I- 90 near Elmhurst Village The village motto "Fertile Ground" still appears on property today as do "Bellwoods" postal addresses throughout its history including becoming a hamlet within McHenry County before being reincorporated as a village within Cook County following annexation into that county in 1965 while remaining self-governing under its own charter until 1990s when it became one municipality within Cook County subject to same rules as other municipalities subject to state law governing villages . Today there are only three families left living primarily in agriculture with some light industry although recent plans have call for development adjacent to old mill site which would add jobs for many during construction period . Most notably bellwether chicken coop which has been operation since early 1900's
