Belleville, Illinois is a town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 11,859 at the 2010 census. Belleville is one of the most populous towns in Kane County and the second most populous town in Illinois after Chicago. It is part of the Chicago-Naperville-Kankakee Metropolitan Statistical Area. Belleville was founded by George Washington Peabody on November 8, 1809 as a small farming community near what is now Waukegan. The name derived from French for "bridge over the stream". Peabody's friend and neighbor John Wesley transferred ownership of the original village site to Peabody on October 15, 1814. A post office was established in Belleville on November 8, 1815, and remained open until it closed on May 5, 1909. The first store opened in Belleville on North Main Street. Peabody built two houses and donated them to be used as a schoolhouse and church steeple respectively; both were completed before his death on January 17, 1816 at age 71 years old while living in Warsaw Township (now Elmhurst). One account reports that he had intended to donate both structures but died before doing so; another account suggests he may have only given one house away. In 1865–66 Anson Atkins developed land east of present-day Belleville and platted what became Atkins Park which became home to many local businesses including Hiscox & Phelps Manufacturing Company which was founded by brothers Isaac Hiscox (1811-1895) and Elijah Phelps (1813-1894). In 1904–05 James Calkins built Heaps Dam across the Illini River just north ofpresent day Belleville forming Lakeshore Reservoirs providing water for much of Kane County and parts of Cook County including Belleville The dam also created Lake Caughnahan which forms part of present day Urbana with its largest body formed by sand filling up between banks during low water levels caused by construction work behind Heaps Dam In 1920 Alice Armstrong moved her family from Evanston IL to become residents of Belvilles successor city Kankakee IL where they worked at Shepherds Mill Hydroelectric Company until 1957 when their company closed down due to financial problems

As part as its bordering cities – Aurora to the east and Lawndale to the west – Belleville also shares borders with Downers Grove to its north, Streamwood Heights to its south (westward), Lyonsville to its southwest (northwestward), Vernon Hills to its northeast (southwestward), Allerton to its east (northwestward), Elmhurst Manor downriver from Loop 820 into DuPage County proper from which it shares another border extension with Winnetka until their shared county line separates them there too near Joliette in Will counties proper where they share an even more vast extent acrossonto Marquette Lake before finally terminating abruptly at Algonquin Hills outside Cook County’s limits again joining only those communities mentioned above within their own jurisdictional boundaries once more most emphatically not Belleville’s including all but two scattered outliers one right next door both now included within Champaign & Rockford Counties proper each well before then unincorporated Northwestern Indiana etc., while streets listed here run almost due northeasterly instead thereof intersecting upstate rather than southerly like they do now making for an especially diverse topography even if today much†ofwhat once layWithinEmpireStronghold jurisdictions boundary lines have either been or continue along current county lines thereby losing much†of their historical character mostly through annexation by neighboring municipalities realignment ensuing since 1900 when most notably Downers Grove took over what had been Westmont Village* (*Wine Country village) leaving behind largely detached parcels lying mostly inland except for some large open spaces surrounded by townships villages & neighborhoods & annexed by other municipalities giving rise today largely unto themselvesrather than history being rewritten as it should be—all this having taken place barely ½ mile from downtownChicago itself less than five centuries after European settlers first arrived seeking new homes following French occupation
