Thanks to donations from individuals and organizations such as the American Astronomical Society (AAS), Stokes-Milburn Observatory is able to maintain its world-class facilities while providing access for students and other enthusiasts around Illinois. The population declined slightly in recent decades; however, new development has resumed in Belleville since 2000 with several high-rise apartment buildings being built near downtown. In 2009 Belleville celebrated its centennial anniversary with events such as street festivals, an art show at Pritzker Pavilion featuring local artists', and parade attendance by local dignitaries including then-Governor Rod Blagojevich.
