Belleville is a small town in northcentral Illinois, located on the Sangamon River. It was founded in 1837 by General John Brown and his army as a fort on the banks of the river. The town was named after Admiral John Smith who fought against French forces in the War of 1812. The first store in Belleville opened in 1838 and it served as a post office until 1865. In 1840, Belleville became the site of what would become one of the most famous gunfights in Illinois history, when Confederate General Robert E. Lee and Union General Ulysses S. Grant fought for control over Cairo, Illinois. The battle resulted in about 300 deaths, including those of both commanders. After the battle, Belleville grew rapidly and by 1850 had two stores, twelve homes, sixteen businesses and over 100 residents. By 1860, Belleville had outgrown its original boundaries and became an incorporated village under the name "Belleville." The Harrisonville Armory began operations at what is now known as First Congregational Church on West State Street in Belleville in 1898. This armory would play an important role throughout much of its history with service to both military and law enforcement organizations alike. In 1907-08, this armory also played host to one of America's first international gun shows which attracted attention from around the world! In 1924-25, this armory hosted one of America's most famous air shows which attracted tens of thousands of spectators! In 1969-70 (the same year that American police officers were killed while protesting), Belleville organized itself into its present form as a city through incorporation proceedings. From then until 1974 much important infrastructure development occurred in what would come to be known as The Town: New Roads were laid out through residential neighborhoods adjacent to lakefront properties; heavy industry came ashore on lakeshore Boulevard near State Street; large tracts were acquired along Kimball Avenue between Route 62nd Street and Maple Road in order to create what would become Central Square Shopping Center (now KFC).
