Belleville is a small town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 5,824 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Belleville is located on the eastern edge of Kane County and is bordered by La Salle Township to the east, Park Forest Township to the south, and Mokena Township to the west. Belleville was laid out in 1837 by John Nevin as a log settlement on what is now State Route 6 in what was then Huntingdon Township. The town's first permanent settler was Isaac Vessey from Vermont who arrived in 1838. By 1840 Belleville had a store and two families were living there. In 1846 James Prentice built a sawmill at Belleville Creek and began processing lumber for shipment to Chicago. In 1850 Belleville voted unanimously to become an incorporated village with a board of trustees chaired by Mayor Aiken Crouse (1810-1875). On July 14, 1850 Belleville became one of 12 villages merged into Chicago when it became part of the newly formed Cook County system under Abraham Lincoln as its first county seat. The village suffered during the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 which destroyed most of downtownChicago including much of Belleville's brick courthouse and mill buildings; however many residents salvaged their belongings and moved back in before reconstruction could begin. After that fire most businesses closed down for several years while new ones were founded throughout DowntownChicago; but within five years most businesses had reopened except for one which had burned down again shortly thereafter due to neglect or arson by some members of staff at local paper company that once employed many locals; this paper company later went bankrupt and all remnants were lost when downtownChicago changed hands multiple times until it reverted back to its original name: "The Daily Herald" circa 1975-1980s before becoming known as simply "The Herald". A post office called Bellevilles been established in 1837 but discontinued operations in 1865 because no mail reached it from there after regular trains stopped running between Chicago and Evansville (now Decatur) IL due to Union Pacific Railroad construction nearbybetween that time until 1893 when finally postal service resumed through Hammondsport IL which served both villages together until 1995 when they each seceded from Cook County creating their own government with their own Post Office Buildings still standing today: Lansingwood Plaza & West Side Plaque Drive Business District - successor building also currently used as branch library
