Belleville is a city in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 21,468 at the 2010 census. Belleville is the second-largest city in Kane County after Chicago. It has been called "The Athens of the Midwest" for its arts and culture scene, as well as its close relationship with Athens, Georgia. Belleville's history dates back to 1812 when it was part of Kankakee Township and was known as "Belleville". In 1836, Belleville became a city under the Illinois Constitution. In 1902, Belleville incorporated as a town and changed its name to "Belleville". The current mayor is Democrat Rick Majerus. Belleville traces its roots to early settlers who arrived in what is now Kane County in 1812. Captain John Armstrong established a cabin here on April 26th of that year while on his way from Ottawa to Vandalia with supplies for his army during the war against Native Americans (the Treaty of Paris). A few years later, on October 15th of 1814, Captain James Evans arrived at this same location and built an even larger cabin which still stands today (now part of the Belle Isle Historic District). That same year saw another group arrive – Willard Coleman’s party – consisting of twenty six men and five boys. They were welcomed by Captn Evans who told them he would provide them with food and shelter until they could find their own land or purchase it from Native American owners. In 1821/22 Joseph Pappenheimer came overland from Germany via Kankakee Valley into what is now Kane County along with Jacob Grimmelmann and Wilhelm Friedrich Schmidtius arriving near present day Bellevilles water tower on November 12th1821 just south of Kendall Road between Park Avenue & West State Street; With their families they set up camp across the road from where we stand today located at 214 N Main Street which then spanned by Mound Road & North Earl Drive now located east side road NW cornering alley between Harding Rd NE & US Highway 20 & home plate lot 5N/24WNW cornering alley betwixt Ironton Rd NE & US Highway 20; One hundred miles southwest reaching Peoria IL but no further east reaching St Louis MO; Arrived safely safe but must have gone through bad weather since there are no records nor any witnesses describing such bad weather What happened next remain unknown but according to folklore some say that due to unusual weather conditions 2 large logs were brought down out side our house causing several tree branches to fall leaving us all tied together for hours until help finally arrived; Another version says that one man named “Beaver” hitched a ride on Captn Evans cartwheeling away suddenly leaving all his belongings behind including most importantly his rifle! As this story goes on many stories are variations thereof making it difficult if not impossibleto determine definitively what actually happened that day! When Chicago annexed Kankakee Township in 1836 certain residents chose to move westward into newly organized Kane County rather than stay within their original township boundaries which may have contributed to Bellevilles growth during this time period also Contributing significantly were nearby Athens OH which had experienced rapid growth due largely to waves of new immigrants flooding into the area seeking opportunity while also establishing trade relationships with various parts of Canada; A thriving agricultural society prevailed resulting in increased production statewide Thanks also in part unto imported goods becoming available closer at hand thanks especially perhaps to Wm Berenson running an extensive grocery store operation across Meridian Ave SW quarter section 3N streets northeast cornering alley betwixt Wabash Ave SE & Union Pacific Railroad tracks where he lived until his death aged ninety nine years old Today marked by Museum open daily 9am thru 4pm Admission free except for parking lots adjacent thereto displaying historical banners depicting past eventsmicrofilm projection inside auditorium showing life around 1900s
