Belleville, Illinois is an agricultural town located in the northwest corner of Illinois. The population was 23,521 at the 2010 census. Belleville is one of the few towns in Illinois without a downtown area. It is instead composed of several small villages and neighborhoods that are spread out over a wide area around Belleville High School and Belleville Municipal Airport. The first optical equipment store in Belleville was founded by three brothers who ran a grocery store on West Main Street. The first optics shop here was run by Mr. John Day and his brother-in-law, Mr. Harry Kappelman, from 1943 to 1945 when they moved to Lebanon, Indiana as part of the United States War Department's effort to purchase optical equipment for military use overseas. In 1947, two brothers opened a store on South State Street which became known as the "Optical House". This business continued until 1953 when it merged with another optical business, Mr. George Weiser's Store #2 on South State Street which had been operated by his father since 1922. It wasn't until 1957 that Optical Equipment Incorporated (OEI) was founded with Samuelson Bros., Mrs., Ethel Kappelman and others as owners/managers along with Raynor & Sons (later renamed opticron). OEI originally sold telescopes but soon began selling digital cameras and other related items including monoculars and binoculars beginning in 1959 under the name 'Belleville Camera'. In 1964, they introduced their own line of electronic camera backpacks called 'Optic Rucksacks' which were very successful both commercially and design wise becoming one of the most popular electronics products ever produced! In 1974 OEI merged with North American Camera Corporation (NAC) forming what would eventually become Nikon Corporation America Incorporated (see below). However due to various legal problemsnuclear testing later led to NAC being dissolved within Nikon Corporation America Incorporated - effectively disbanding all optical businesses within it! However some key employees such as president Harry Weiser continued working at NAC until its dissolution circa 1988 despite this fact! brethren Gerry Breen who started working for me at North American Camera Corp also continued working there until he retired in 1992 - making him one of only four people ever employed full time at Nikon Corporation America Incorporated while it functioned as an Optical Business! This history leaves us curious about how things may have looked if those pesky legal issues hadn't arisen... could we be looking at an entirely different optical accessory industry today? Time will tell...
