It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area and is served by the Belleville Township government. Belleville was first settled in 1836 as a result of gold finds near Kankakee Lake. The town was named for General James H. Belleville, then an officer in the Union army who had fought in the Mexican-American War and completed several other campaigns as a Brigadier General during that conflict. The town's growth followed a similar pattern to those around it: settlers came from surrounding towns and villages, attracted by good soil, plentiful water supplies, and easy access to transportation. By 1840 Belleville had become one of Illinois' most significant settlements with its own post office, schoolhouse, and churches. The boom times for Belleville were short-lived however; prices for goods exported to Great Britain crashed during the Panic of 1847 which led to mass unemployment throughout much of America. In retaliation Great Britain began tariffs on all American imports which led to even more plummeting sales for Belleville businesses including clothing stores which went out of business completely within two years. In 1850 Belleville's last settler died from exposure while prospecting for gold near Kankakee Lake; it would be another 25 years before any new arrivals arrived in what would become known as “the Town” (population 8887 at 2000). Despite its troubles early on in its history Bellevilles famous namesake managed to help turn it into one of Illinois' most prosperous communities over time thanks largely to his efforts as mayor from 1868-1870 and his work on creating landowning families who could provide stability and support their community through agriculture or manufacturing ventures (manufacturing didn't take off until after World War II). Despite this success many people still refer to themselves simply as "BellevILLE" residents today despite having moved away from their original homes some time ago (population 14554 at 2010 census). One thing that has stayed constant throughout all these years is its close relationship with neighboring towns such as Hollandale (pop: 7402) which borders it directly on one side and northcentral Chicago on the other; both municipalities have maintained strong traditionsOF collaborationED cooperation throughshared services such as education, police/fire protection, ambulance service etcetera since they were created centuries ago!

Belleville was founded in 1824 by Captain John Evans and his wife, Sarah. The first post office in Belleville was established in 1826. In 1868, the city became one of the twenty-six townships in Cook County. On December 15, 1893, Belleville merged with neighboring town of Holland to form a new municipality.
