RAFC produced firearms under several different brand names until it became Remington-GWB Guns Incorporated in 1995. Belleville was founded on December 12, 1856, by Captain John Sennett and his family as a trading post on the banks of the Kankakee River. The name "Belleville" comes from French meaning "a place where people can gather to trade". Belleville's rich history began with its first settler, Captain John Sennett, who arrived in December 1856. At that time, there were only a few hundred people living in what is now Belleville.Captain Sennett built himself a cabin and named his settlement La Salle after Major Pierre-Jean La Salle who had led an expedition against Native Americans in Canada earlier that year.Sennett's original town plat showed three blocks long by one block wide with five streets running north-south and two east-west . Today most historians believe that this layout was not intentionally designed to make sure that goods would be distributed evenly among all residents but rather because it was thought to be more efficient at using up space given its location on the banks of the Kankakee River which meant water transportation could be easily accessed from both ends of the village limits without having to go through town. In 1862 Captain Sennett merged his own home village into Belleville so that all residents could benefit from same level of services (such as education) offered by their captain/town leader (later mayor). This merger also happened due to political pressure from then Governor David Yates because he saw Bellevilles growth as a threat to Prairieville which was then growing rapidly at his hands. In 1865 Mayor John Fenton merged another home village - Maplewood - into Belleville making it even more diverse with services available to everyone within its boundaries including education (now McDonough High School). Today's downtown core contains over 60 businesses and 1 million square feet (1009 m2) of commercial space! With such diversity come many cultures: French Canadians are dominant in retail while African Americans have made strong contributions in professions like law enforcement/firefighting or health care; Poles live primarily in housing projects just south of town while Lithuanians frequent nearby Decatur; Russians make up a small percentage but significant number in professional fields; Italians are numerous near downtown while Germans dominate around South Side Boulevard; Irish immigrants settled mainly near North Side Boulevard between Milwaukee Street & Veterans Parkway before leaving for Ontario County; Asians form an increasing minority around Prospect Avenue just west of town while Latinos continue to grow significantly around Northwest Side Boulevard & Irving Park Road withinChicago city limits

Belleville became a Village in 1888 and won the distinction of being one of the first municipalities to be completely automated in 1922. The village ceased to exist as a municipality on October 1, 1997 when it merged with neighboring Elgin Township.
