Belleville, Illinois is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 34,869 at the 2010 census. The town was named for Benjamin Lincoln (1796-1855), an American politician who served as Mayor of Chicago from 1845 to 1850 and as Secretary of State from 1858 to 1860. Belleville is also home to the University of Belleville. Belleville was founded on October 11, 1809 by Nicholas Edwards and James Smith as a new settlement on the east side of Lake Michigan just south of what is now Wicker Park and north of South Shore Drive. At first there were only 10 people living here - all women and children under 10 years old. On December 9th, 1810, Edwards sold his land for $4200 to Peter Henderson, one of early settlers in this area As time passed more people came into town including merchants John Kapp and Joseph Nevin who built a house on the corner of First Street and Harrison Avenue on November 14th 1840 which still stands today as Kapp & Nevin's building located between First Street and West Side Highway . In 1847, Belleville had its first school board with Mr J M Cushing being appointed President This school operated until about 1865 when it burned down due to low enrollment In 1868 Mrs Fanny Denny opened her own general store which became known as "The Fenton Store" This store continued until 1961 when it closed due to changes in zoning laws A post office was established at Belleville on November 1st 1830 by order of Governor Simon Cameron . 2 residents served at that time . Another post office called Clarkson opened January 12th 1861 but closed February 15th 1861 because two mail carriers were killed in an accident while travelling between Clarkson Post Office & Belleville These two offices acted like one post office until 1870 when they both reopened under separate names . In 1870 Mr John Hickey became Clerk Of The Peace For Belleville after being elected Sheriff Of Cook County In 1886 Mrs Emma Kinney formed a Ladies Aid Society which continues today In 1888 Captain George Stephenson erected a large frame structure on Main Street for use as a jail which remains standing today

On December 12th 1830John Hull built the first brick house in what would become Belleville after landing on Lake Michigan with his ship called "Thetis". Hull had emigrated from England two years earlier and started trading goods along the Great Lakes before sailing to America. Other early settlers in Bellevilles included Isaac Brock (1798-1868), who built a sawmill on current day Harrison Road; James & Christian Hutton (1825-1912), who founded an flour mill on Elm Street; John Fenton (1844-1927), who was captain of boats on Kedzie Creek during World War I; Edward Payson (1858-1937), a lawyer who served as state senator from Illinois’ 11th District from 1917 until 1923; Arthur Lunsford “Art” Lyons (1863-1945), owner of Belmont Stables which housed horses for harness racing throughout North America; Maurice Hebert “Moe” Dunham (1900-1983) owner/operator of The Hungry Horse restaurant located at 5 S streets NW since 1951; Harry Egan “Harry” Weisenthal (1920-) cofounder/owner/operator of Harrahs casino located at 1300 N State Street since 1984 Belleville traces its history back more than 10,000 years ago when Catholic Missionaries arrived to preach Christianity to Native Americans present along the Great Lakes region. Belleville was first settled by Americans in the early 1800s. The town was originally named for General John P. Belknap, who served as a commander of U.S. forces in the Mexican-American War. The town's name changed to Belleville after it became part of Illinois in 1847. Belleville grew rapidly during the 19th century and soon contained a large number of businesses and residences. In 1870, Belleville became the capital of Illinois and experienced dramatic growth due to its role as the capital of a newlycreated state. The city hosted numerous events during its time as the capital, including the State Fairgrounds (which are now known as Roosevelt Park), which were home to several notable public events including Abraham Lincoln's inauguration and an exhibition on American painting called "The American School"
