Belleville began as a small trading post on the banks of the Des Plaines River between 1825 and 1830 by George Catlin and his brother-in-law Peter Zenger. In 1854, Belleville was founded as a village by Joshua Siskind, David Ransom, John Auldridge, Augustus Kelley, Samuel Dibblee and others under the name of "Belleville." The name was changed to "Belleville" on July 1, 1855 when it became part of the newly created Cook County. In 1870–71, when Cook County was organized into counties, Belleville lost its status as an incorporated village but retained its right to vote for members of county councils which served as deliberative assemblies for local issues (the precursor to modern City Councils). Industrialization brought new economic opportunities to Belleville during the early 20th century; however social unrest led to violence in 1922 that destroyed several blocks of downtown business district before being quelled by law enforcement personnel using excessive force. From 1942 until 1945 Belleville was headquarters for Army Air Forces' Third Air Force Station Kankakee branch unit No 91-0751 which flew Boeing B-29 Superfortress bombers from nearby Dowling Field RAF Kirbyville UK under military control during World War II while Kankakee AFB operated as USAAF's primary training ground for bomber pilots from other wings worldwide; this facility later became known as Dyess Air Force Base . In 1951 Bellevilles first high school graduate class graduated from North High School (now North Park) located adjacent to present day State Street Plaza Shopping Center - making it one of only two high schools (the other being South Side High School) in Illinois where graduates still attend commencement ceremonies more than 50 years later! On May 7th 1954 – just three weeks after graduating from North High School – Bellevilles first post office opened with 3 mailboxes! Of course everything had changed since those days back then! The rapid growth experienced by Belleville during much of the 20th century contributed significantly both directly - through increased employment opportunities available due largely to industrialization -and indirectly through annexation by neighboring towns such as Streamwood following annexation efforts initiated by Mayor Harry Pappas Sr.; these additional residents resulted in greater demand for services and infrastructure necessary for continued settlement despite lower tax rates enjoyed by residents residing within city limits prior thereto
