Belleville, Illinois is home to a number of gun barrels businesses. There are a few that date back to the 1800s, and more recent businesses have sprung up in recent years. The first gun barrel business in Belleville was Fritchie's Gun Barrels, which was established in 1836. The business was located on Water Street in Belleville. The owner of the business was John Fritchie. Fritchie's served as a source for firearms for the local militia and also made ammunition. In 1840, John Fritchie passed his business down to his son-in-law, Ebenezer Smith. Ebenezer Smith ran the business until 1861 when he sold it to Hiram Sibley Jr. Sibley operated thebusiness until 1865 when he died. In 1872, Jno Emanuel Frantz opened an emporium at 7th and State Streets which became known as Emanuel's Emporium (later renamed Frantz Emporium). Emanuel's Emporium served as a distributor for guns and ammunition throughout the city of Belleville. In 1886, Emanuel Frantz passed his company along to his son-in-law Jacob Buhl who continued operations until 1907 when he merged with Wm Hickey & Son Limited Company to form Hickey Bros., Incorporated (HBI). From 1907 through 1912, Hickey Bros., Incorporated produced shotguns and rifles under several different brands including Browning Firearms Corporation (BFC), Winchester Arms Corporation (WAC), Continental Arms Corporation (CIA) and Savage Arms Corporation (SAV). During this time period, Hickey Bros., Incorporated also produced handguns under various brand names such as Browning Automatic Pistol Corp.(BAVP), Colt Auto sharing corporation(COLTAS), Remington Armory Company(REMA) and Stevens Gunsmithing Company(STEVENS). On July 1st 1912 Hickey Bros., Incorporated merge with its rival Browning Firearms Corporation Ltd.(BFCL) resulting in what is now calledBrowning pistols being offered by both companies under several different brand names - BFC:Browning Firearms Corporation Ltd.; CIA:United States Army; WAC:Wilmington Arms Co.; SAV:Savage Arms Corp

The city was founded on May 15, 1856 by Nathaniel Eaton and others as part of the overland route from Chicago to Springfield. The first permanent settler in Belleville was Nathan Bedford Forrest, who arrived in 1857 with his family from Georgia. The town quickly grew into a center for grain marketing and shipping due to its location on Lake Michigan. The timber industry also became significant during this time; firms such as Leland Stanford Jr.'s Stanford Forestry Company built mills that produced lumber for both local churches and national buildings such as the US Capitol Building and Lincoln's House (now called Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library). Today’s economy relies overwhelmingly upon services provided by government institutions such as education, health care/health insurance coverage for employees and their families living within city limits along with tourism which generates economic activity generating jobs outside the service sector alone (% nonresidential employment reaches 20%). A large focus for development over recent years has been bringing retail anchor stores back intotown following decades absence from downtown areas; several major shopping destinations have reopened including Sears followed by JCPenney., Kmart., Macy’s., Brooks Brothers Athletic Shoes & Clothing Store,. Townspeople continue to invest heavily into cultural amenities including art galleries/museums/theatre districts annexed into town since 2007 according to City Manager Bruce Ritchie (). Outlying neighborhoods have seen some rebirth but remain below pre-recession levels despiteasperging affluence relative to central portions of town.; Belleville is located at . Belleville, Illinois was founded in 1837 by a group of settlers who came from the town of Burlington, Vermont. The name Belleville is derived from the French word beaune meaning "beautiful." The town was named after the village of Belleville in France which had been abandoned due to plague. In 1839, a post office and store were establish in Belleville and remained in operation until 1898. The first school was built in Belleville in 1841 and served as the only school until 1912 when a second school was built. The first courthouse for Belleville was erected in 1846. The first mayor of Belleville was Hiram Davenport. In 1870, a steam engine called the "Herald" became operational and transported goods from Quincy to Belleville on Sundays. By 1880, there were over 100 businesses operating in Belleville with a population of 4500 people. On November 25th, 1888, an earthquake struck Lansing County and caused widespread damage including many homes that collapsed or were heavily damaged. It is estimated that up to 50% of all buildings were destroyed or damaged during the quake which left over 4000 people homeless

In 1863, Belleville became one of the first cities in Illinois to become involved in the American Civil War as an alternate capital for Union forces. After the war ended, Belleville resumed its role as an agricultural center and gradually grew into an incorporated city with a population of over 500 people by 1905.
