Belleville is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. It is located in the northern portion of the Chicago metropolitan area and is part of the greater Chicago–Naperville–Cook County region. The population was 12,812 at the 2010 census. Belleville is one of two towns in Cook County that were incorporated as cities on November 3, 1857; the other is River Forest. On April 20, 1865, Belleville became Union City through annexation by River Forest. Belleville has been considered an agricultural center since its founding and still produces some of Illinois' most important crops such as wheat and corn. The first post office was established in Belleville on February 17, 1837. A sawmill built in Belleville by John Crain was destroyed by a fire on October 26, 1840. The first store opened in Belleville on November 3, 1857 by Wm Haines and Asa Kappler with local produce from farmsteads around town. By 1860 there were nine stores operating in Belleville with a total population of about 100 people. By 1870 there were 21 stores operating with a total population of about 350 people; however this number fell rapidly due to competition from larger settlements within Cook County which had become incorporated as cities during this time period. The railroad reached Bellevilles early days and began serving it as a stopping point for passengers travelling north to Chicago or south to points east or west via the DuPage Peninsula Railroad (now IL-118). In 1881 the Sisters of Mercy built what became known as St Joseph's Academy which served as both a primary school and hospital for residents living near their conventnery off State Road 479 (now I-290). At that time there were no schools open to children outside white families so instruction took place inside the conventnery walls between morning Mass and afternoon English classes taught by nuns who also cared for many sick patients brought into town for treatment during those difficult times following American Civil War efforts to free all slaves within reach of our newly won nation! In 1905 factory workers at J&L Manufacturing Company erected an impressive three story red brick structure now known as "The Lighthouse" on North Main Street which housed offices and dormitories used by factory workers during their lunch hours before returning home for dinner or study time at their families homes nearby while production continued upstairs. This facility continues operation today as "J&L Kitchen" providing employment opportunities for many current and former Factory Workers who live throughout Kane County today! On December 1st 1907 – just over 100 years ago – Bellevilles incorporation into city status occurred when all villages within Cook county joined together under one organization called “the city’s board” led by Mayor Elias Howe….Many Potters & Blacksmiths started businesses here including Luke Bros Butcher shop (later Mrs Jane Potter closed shop)…Civic Club was organized Apr 1912 when Ladies met monthly to discuss local issues…..By 1916 there were 9 amateur organizations chartered…..Bellevilles Post Office opened Nov 3rd 1857….2 Commercial buildings built 1908-10 named First National Bank building & Second National Bank building…… 2 blacksmith shops also started up soon after…….. lots changed hands thru wars etc but most importantly People got along well until recent times
