In 1837, Congress passed the first national census in America, which counted all of the United States as a single country. In Beach Park, Illinois, residents responded to that census and were required to list their occupation and place of birth on a form called the “Surveyor’s Marker.” That surveyor’s marker is still standing at 4th and Douglas Streets in Beach Park today. The town of Beach Park was founded by John Beecham in 1837 as part of what would become Chicago. The town was named for General James K. Polk who had beenpresident at the time. General Polk donated land to be platted into a town and dedicated it to his wife Julia Child after she became president of the United States in 1849. Beach Park quickly grew because its location made it an ideal spot for manufacturing businesses and other industries. By 1900, Beach Park had over 100 businesses including breweries, grocery stores, hotels, schools, churches and an opera house. During World War II, beach park was home to naval air station Northwestern Illinois Naval Air Station which served as a training ground for Navy pilots during World War II. After the war ended, Northwestern Illinois Naval Air Station closed down and many of its personnel moved away from Beach Park into new neighborhoods such as Skokie or Elmhurst Estates in south suburban Chicago while some continued to live on-base until 1959 when it was abolished entirely due to budget cuts within the military community concerned with nuclear missile testing operations occurring off-base
The Beach Park community was founded in 1892. The first post office was established in 1895, and the first school was opened in 1907. In 1916, the first swimming pool was built in Beach Park, and it continued to be used until 1978. In 1948, the first golf course was constructed in Beach Park, and it continues to be used today.
