Since its inception as a small town with few amenities, beach park has seen some growth over time including the addition of several shopping centers including: Beacheside Shopping Center (1991), Pavilion Place Shopping Center (2005), and Northland Mall (2008).

The post office closed in 1951 but the town continued to grow until it reached its peak with a population of over 1,500 people in 1970. However, during the 1970s there were significant declines in population due to various factors including suburbanization and economic recession. In 2007-2008 the town lost much of its commercial activity as well as most of its infrastructure including its water filtration plant which led to significant reductions in water availability for residents
The first known European settlement in Beach Park was a smallpox infected cabin established by French fur traders in 1795. The town began to form around 1810 when merchants and farmers started moving into the area from nearby towns. By 1835, Beach Park had become a thriving community with its own school and newspaper. In 1852, the Illinois General Assembly passed a bill creating the township of Beach Park and giving it to the people of Beach Park. The town continued to grow until it reached its peak population in 1910 when over 12,000 people lived in the town. However, during World War I, the town was bypassed due to its distance from conflict zones. In 1920s, Beach Park experienced another growth spurt with construction of new homes starting up along State Route 90. However, due to increasing development rates and traffic congestion within the township, beach park's population decreased by half by 1930s. By 1940s, only 6-10 percent of beach park's residents still lived there while most of the rest resided in neighboring communities such as Carbondale or Springfield. In 1960s and 1970s, many businesses closed down due to changes in zoning laws which made it difficult for them to stay open longer than five years without being forced out by regulations from Community Development Districts (CAD). As a result of this change in zoning law and lack of business investment throughout much of beach park's history, many roads were built but few homes were completed because developers foundered on trying to build too much at once instead of focusing on long-term investments that would have allowed these businesses to stay open for generations
