Beach Park is a small city in McHenry County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Beach Park is located on the shore of Lake Michigan and is bordered by Cook County to the north and east, Indiana to the south and west, and McHenry County to the northwest. The first Europeans to visit Beach Park were French traders who came ashore from their boat "L'Insurgente" in 1795. In 1806, James Kapptoura purchased land at present-day Beach Park from John Prentiss for $2 per acre. Kapptoura established a tavern called The Gilded Cage which he operated until his death in 1827. He bequeathed his land and tavern to his son John Kapptoura III who renamed it "Kapp's Harbor". In 1838, Hennepin Road was completed through Beach Park and became known as State Highway 4th Avenue (later State Route 51). In 1921, Harry Ziegler donated 8 acres (3 ha) of beachfront property southeast of downtown Beach Park along Lake Michigan for use as a public park. Ziegler had been interested in developing this land since 1916 when he developed what is now Loop 3rd Street into an amusement park with amusement rides called "Ziegler's Reef". At that time it was one of only two amusement parks open in Illinois outside of Chicago proper. soon after this donation efforts swept through town - many people wanted to see how much effort could be put into making this a great public space instead of just another piece of real estate development Baron Sonderman had started years earlier on Broadway near Wacker Drive had accomplished so successfully - it quickly became one of Chicago's favorite summer tourist destinations because its wide open beaches didn't suffer during wintertimeicity like other lakeside communities did then or later!
