Beach Park is a census-designated place in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 9,819 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The community began as a small fishing village on the beach north of downtown Chicago. In 1907 businessmen Wirt Hargrave and George Payson bought land east of Beach Park from the Chisholm family for $1,000 and developed it into an amusement park with a beach, boardwalk, and theater. By 1915 the town had grown to include a post office, grocery store, bank, hotel, and two churches. The name "Beach Park" was chosen to honor Admiral John F Kennedy's homeport of Boston (now Quincy). In 1922 developer Harry Jaffe purchased land south of Beach Park from Payson for $2 million and built what became known as "the penthouse complex." With its five stories of glass-and-steel buildings and views of Lake Michigan or downtown Chicago skyline, "the penthouse complex" quickly became one of the most popular tourist destinations in Chicagoland. By 1930 it had become one of Illinois' largest real estate developments with over 100 properties under management. In 1932 Jaffe sold his interests in "the penthouse complex" to developers Lewis Pollock and William Ladd; they renamed it Joliet Gardens after their home city in Illinois (then Joliet). In 1938 businessman Harry Seawright purchased land east of Beach Park from Pollock and Ladd for $6 million; he built what would become known as Beacheside Drive which connected Joliet Gardens with Beacheside Pier on the shoreline opposite Navy Pier (now Lincoln Park). By 1954 Beacheside Drive had been renamed Shorewood Boulevard after another beech forest near Coast Guard Station Shoal Bayou on Long Island Sound. Beach Park is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,871 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The community was originally called "Beachwood" and "Beachfort". On December 20, 1868, a group of men from nearby Mount Prospect voted to incorporate as Beach Park. The first post office opened in Beach Park on November 17, 1872. In 1905-1906, two businesses in Beach Park were the only businesses open during the entire week because they had run out of goods to sell. One business alone sold produce for $2 per barrel. At that time there were no grocery stores or libraries in the village so residents relied on small farmers for their news and information. In 1931-1932 beach park was hit by a tornado that destroyed most of the village including all but one house which stood until 1970 when it was rebuilt as a single family home with an attached garage). In 1932-1933 some members of the Village Council met to discuss ways to improve life for beach parkers and decided to establish what would become known as "the committee" which would help improve living conditions for beach parkers and also act as an advisory body on town issues such as health and housing concerns among others
