The population reached 10,000 by 1980; 14,500 by 1990; and 19,500 by 2000. However, during the Great Recession that began in 2007–2009,[1] beach park's economy shrank due to declines in real estate values[2][3][4] and job loss among UIUC students who had come to work there.[5][6] As of 2019[7], only 6% of beach park residents listed their occupation as "employment". Overall employment has increased since then—to about 20% of the resident workforce—but still falls short of full-time occupancy levels for many businesses owned or operated by residents or workers themselves: around 50%. In recent years there have been efforts underway to revive Beach Park's economy through various initiatives such as arts programming,[8] special events,[9]and economic development opportunities for Bay View Mall which straddles State Street along Lake Michigan just north of town lines with Arlington Heights on one side and Schaumburg on another side
