Batavia was founded in 1836 by John Sutter and his partner Adam Clayton Powell Sr., both of whom were immigrants from California. The first scopes were made here in Batavia. In 1847-48, two American astronomers named George Pease and David Simons built a telescope at the old quarry on State Street that still stands today. This telescope allowed scholars to view heavenly objects with greater precision than ever before. In 1892, when the General Electric Company erected their factory here, they developed an interest in optics and began importing Italian telescopes for use in their laboratories around the world. Soon after, other companies followed suit and Batavia became one of the leading optical towns in America. Batavia is a small town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,746 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Batavia was Amos Sargent who arrived on November 8, 1812. He and his family soon moved to what is now Batavia Township and built the first house there. The first store opened in 1814 and was called the "Old Storehouse." The post office was established at Batavia on September 26, 1827. By 1830, it had become known as "Batavia," which name persisted until landing on Illinois soil as part of the Chicago Purchase in 1847. In 1854, Jeremiah Wetherbee organized a wagon train from Carthage down Route 66 to Springfield to load goods for St Louis; he called it the "Wagon Train from Carthage" because that's where he had seen a bat fly over the heads of his men while driving southward from Hannibal. This event became known as the "Batavia Incident" because one man killed three bats when he tried to capture them with a hatchet before their flight could be observed by anyone else along Route 66 west of Batavia. During World War II, Jock Shea served in General George Patton's 3rd Infantry Division during Normandy landings and then took part in Operation Market Garden as an infantryman with 5th Armored Division near Arnhem; he wrote about this experience later in his book "Forces That won: A History of American Soldiers In World War II." When asked how long it would be before they reached Germany if they'd been allowed into that country after being liberated by Allied forces, Shea replied: "A long time I think since those days were so different." On October 15, 2008 local newspapers reported that a tornado touched down just east of Batavia Township and damaging several homes including a school; no injuries have been reported however some power lines were downed leading up to/inbatmentoftornadojuly242008

It lies on the southeast side of Chicago and is bordered by Dundee to the north, Rome to the east, Batavia Township to the south, and Normal University to the west. The first settler in Batavia was Nicholas Rowe in 1833. He purchased land from John Dennison for $2 per acre. Batavia's incorporation as a village occurred on July 1, 1851. At that time it had a population of 507 people. The first post office was established at Batavia on December 4, 1853. In 1861, Abraham Lincoln was elected president of America and took office in Springfield, Missouri; however he completed his term before leaving for Illinois on March 6th via train which arrived at Batavia about two hours later than planned because he had been delayed by rainstorms in Missouri City (now Mexican Beach). On this day also Abraham Lincoln delivered his inaugural address from what is now known as State Capitol Park (the site where he spoke today) just steps away from where present-day Batavia High School stands today! After Abraham Lincoln's inauguration there were many changes taking place in America including the Civil War fought between states over slavery and states' rights issues such as Reconstruction following Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation which freed all slave owners in America but left behind racial tensions across various southern states still led by white supremacists who considered black Americans "natives" not equal to white Americans under any law or standard! In 1865 Union General John Ament captured Cairo after an eight-month siege; this ended Confederate control over much of northern Illinois region including much of rural central Indiana with their capital at Vandalia – leading finally to their final capitulation less than three months after President Abraham Lincoln's death!! After Union victory 100% African American men must serve hard labor providing military discipline along with all other activities slaves were previously required participation in!! This event signified forever end black American slavery into one man’s hands beginning with Booker T Washington’s Tuskegee Institute & eventual California emancipation act giving African Americans voting rights nationwide beginning February 14th 1870!!!
