Batavia is a small town in Hancock County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,879 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Quad Cities Metropolitan Area. The first European visitors to Batavia were French traders in 1624 who named it "Baton Rouge." In 1814, General James K. Polk and his army invaded Missouri and burned down the city of Nauvoo because they thought its Mormons had hidden weapons from the US government. This event forever changed Batavia's name and identity. The following year, President James K. Polk called for all Native Americans living east of the Mississippi River to be forced onto reservations or onto reservations that would be attached to Indian Territory if they did not convert to Christianity or else leave their lands. As a result of this policy change, most of Batavia's Native American residents left within two years, including many of its citizens who had been born there. Not until after World War II didBatavia return to its original name as an unincorporated community located in Hancock County on a peninsula between the rivers Ia and La Salle Rivers. In 1847-48, John Stephenson built a sawmill on what is now State Street in Batavia and started producing lumber which he shipped throughout central Illinois and even into Indiana and Ohio. He also built homes for himself and his family here in what is now known as Stephenson House Park; Stephenson House still stands today (although it has been renovated multiple times). Stephenson also founded Stephenson Paper Mill which became one of Illinois' largest paper companies until it shuttered in 1970 due to competition from worldwidefolding mills.).
