Batavia is a village in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The village was founded as a small agricultural community named Batavia on November 3, 1847 by John and Anna Ryan. A post office was established in Batavia on December 6, 1847, and remained in operation until it was discontinued on January 5, 1902. At its peak in 1875, Batavia had a population of about 350 people. In 1898, however, the village's population decreased to 100 due to increased immigration from Hungary and other parts of Europe. The Village of Batavia is located south-southeast of Chicago along Interstate 90 near the state line between Illinois and Wisconsin. According to the 2010 census report*, it has a total area of , all land. According to the 2006 census*, there are 2 schools operated by the Village: one for grades K-8th (grades Pre-K through 4th), called "Batavia Elementary School", and one for grades 5th-8th (grades 9th through 12th), called "Batavia Middle School". There are also two private residences: One is owned by Friends Of Batavia which provides meals to students who cannot afford them; and another is privately owned but used as an overnight camp ground for children attending nearby schools when their parents can't stay home during school days or they have other commitments outside of school hours

Batavia, Illinois is a small town in Stephenson County, Illinois that was founded in 1847. The community was named for the Dutch city of Batavia, which was located in the same area. It began as a stop on the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad. In 1921, it became part of the City of Springfield. As of 2013, it had a population of 511 people. The first settler at Batavia was John Beech who arrived in 1847. He built a log cabin on the banks of the Sangamon River. Beech's son-in-law and successor, James Fenton, also built a cabin here around 1848. By 1850, there were 10 or 11 settlers living at Batavia. In 1851, an act to create Stephenson County was passed by Congress and signed by President Fillmore. Stephenson County included portions of present-day Stephenson County as well as parts of Kankakee and Champaign counties near Mount Vernon in south central Illinois. The county seat was Menardville until 1870 when it moved to Jacksonville from Monticello because Jacksonville had been selected as the new county seat after Stephensville became too populous for Menardville to support. Batavia remained an unincorporated community until 1906 when it joined Jackson Township formed from part of Stephenson County east of Jacksonville on what is now State Route 62 (Route 4). At that time it had a population estimated at 100 people but has since grown to over 1 thousand people due to development within its borders including: agriculture; manufacturing; healthcare services; nonresidential development (residence halls/condos/hotels); professional services; retail business; transportation infrastructure; and more! The early history surrounding Batavia can be traced back to 1840 when two men named John Brown located land just outside modern-day Batavia on what is now known as Indiana Road between present-day Hinsdale Avenue and Old US Highway 622 (now Wabash Avenue). They called their property "Brownstown", which derived from theircolored coat colors -brown for white man, black for Indian man - which matched those associated with their land holdings therein." Brownstown served as their main home until they abandoned it circa 1865 due to lack of trees or water resources suitable for farming operations!"
Batavia was founded in 1834 by John Batavia and his brother George. The town was named after the Dutch city of Batavia, which was then part of the East India Company. It was located on the Illinois River, about 20 miles southwest of Springfield. In 1841, Batavia became a township in Champaign County. In 1857, it became a village. On July 1, 1871, it merged with neighboring Pella to form the new town of Batavia-Pella.
