Batavia was founded as a town in 1837 by German immigrants and named after Batavia, an ancient Indian village on the Great Lakes. The first settler was Johann Christian Bachman who arrived in 1838. In 1847, Batavia became a county seat and remained so until it merged with Kilbournville in 1865 to form what is now Kane County. After being annexed by Chicago in 1902, Batavia regained its county seat status and grew rapidly as a manufacturing center for rubber products and other industrial goods during the late 19th century and early 20th century. In 1930, batavia was renamed after George Washington Lincoln Boulevard which runs through it. The city has since undergone some significant changes throughout its history; most recently it underwent rapid redevelopment following the 2007-2008 financial crisis that affected many areas of Illinois including Kane County particularlybatavia lost over 60% of its jobs during this time but managed to maintain high quality of life

Batavia, Illinois was founded in 1814 by General John Brown and his men during the American War of Independence. The town became a post-war center due to its strategic location on the Ohio River. In 1865, Batavia was named after Baron von Batavia, who led the Dutch army in the siege of Fort Amsterdam in 1672. The city's growth continued through the years until its incorporation as a municipality in 1903. Over time, Batavia has become an important cultural center for the region and has played a significant role within both Illinois and Indiana history. The town was first settled by farmers from nearby Decatur County who arrived during 1811–12 when settlers began arriving to take up land grants granted by President James K. Polk. By 1814, Batavia had developed into a small community with about 100 residents. That year, General John Brown and his men joined forces with other volunteers to fight against British troops at Battle of Fallen Timbers near present-day Springfield, Illinois. After that successful engagement, Brown moved his camp to what is now called Griggsville and began planning the town's foundation legend credits him with naming it "Batavia." Batavia grew rapidly thanks to its strategic location on the river which made it an ideal post-war center due to its access to goods and transportation available throughout much of Ohio Valley including Indianapolis (then known as Lucas County). The town reached its peak population size around 1860 with over 1,000 residents although it decreased considerably following World War II due to residential development in nearby Indianapolis and other areas of central Indiana. Finally, Batavia experienced a resurgence starting in the late 1990s as a result of efforts by local boosters including businessman Jeff Beeson who restored many historic buildings within the city limits while also creating new businesses/residential districts within them that attracted new residents back into downtown Bataviaultimate goal being revitalization & economic revival
