Batavia, Illinois was founded in 1836 by Captain Ebenezer Higgins and his wife, Abby. The town quickly became a center for the agricultural industry due to its location on the Mississippi River. In 1841, Batavia married into a wealthy family and became known as the "New Jerusalem." The Higginses were influential in politics and business throughout their lifetime. Batavia, Illinois is a small town located in Batavia Township, McHenry County, Illinois. The population was 1,478 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Rockford metropolitan area. The first people to live in what is now Batavia were Dutch settlers who arrived in 1624. They named their community "Batavia". In 1841, the village name was changed to "Fremont" after General John Frémont and his army invaded Indiana Territory during the Mexican-American War. The community's post office operated from 1843 to 1853. In 1907, Batavia began serving as the capital of McHenry County and it remained so until 1959 when Champaign became the county seat. On October 3, 1925, a tornado struck Batavia destroying all but one home and damaging many other buildings before dissipating near milepost 9 on U.S Highway 36. The twister killed five people and injured 71 others according to reports at the time; however official records only list six fatalities due to damage done by the tornado itself rather than injuries caused by other events that day such as an outbreak of polio which affected several villages nearby including Batavia. Battalion Commander First Lieutenant Clarence Larkin (also known as Red Cloud) died while fighting with Company C of 25th Infantry Regiment - 8th US Infantry during World War I when his machine gun Roundabout missed its target and hit another soldier killing him instantly also within seconds; he was buried at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington Virginia USA with full military honors
Batavia was a town in Illinois and part of the Black Hawk County, Illinois region. It was founded in 1810 by John Batavia, an Indian agent. The town had a population of about 1,500 people when it was destroyed by a fire in 1847.
