Batavia, Illinois was founded in 1847 by George Stephenson and his brothers. It is the oldest town in Kane County and one of the most important cultural centers in Northwestern Illinois. The town is located on the east side of the Kankakee River, about 12 miles southeast of Chicago. Batavia has a population of over 10,000 people and is home to many businesses and institutions, including Kane County Community College, the Batavia Museum, and the George Stephenson House Museum. The town also features a wide variety of outdoor activities, including fishing, hunting, golfing, and boatbuilding.

The first target guns were created in the 1500s BC by ancient Greeks. They used small metal discs as targets. These disks were designed to be shot at with bows and arrows.
In 1898, the U.S. Patent No. 5,848,992 was issued to John Browning for his new repeating rifle design. This firearm was designed as a weapon that could be fired continuously with little reloading time. The gun was used in the American Civil War by Union soldiers and eventually became known as the Browning Rifle.
Batavia was founded in 1812 by John Alexander Dunlap and his family. It became a fur trading post on the Illinois River. The town prospered until the American Revolution. In 1791, Batavia was burned to the ground by Patriot forces during the War of 1812. Afterward, it reverted to Indian control and had no formal government until 1821 when it became a community under the jurisdiction of the Shawnee Agency. In 1830, Batavia was annexed by Peoria County and lost its status as an independent community. The population decreased from 375 in 1840 to 100 in 1860 due to waves of immigration and landlessness. By 1870, Batavia was abandoned following a fire that destroyed most of the town center and all but one building on Main Street. The first settlers arrived in what is now Batavia Township in 1811 with John Alexander Dunlap as their leader. He led a group of men who traveled upriver from Nauvoo, Illinois to establish trade with Native Americans and make acquisitions for himself and his kinfolk. At first, he did not pursue farming or settlement because he desired additional resources for trade ventures upstream; instead, he set about building a trading post near present-day Batavia on the river’s banks. In 1812, John Alexander Dunlap married Sarah Goodnight and they set out from Nauvoo with their families to found their new town at what is today known as Batavia Township on December 8th of that year. A few days later they met other early pioneers who had also journeyed downriver: James Butler Shafer (age 16), Abraham Lincoln (age 23), Solomon Northrup (aged 24), Daniel Dunn (aged 25) – all men who were future fathers-in-law or brothers-in-law to Dunlap family members Sarah Goodnight bore them children: Samuel (born October 15th, 1813), Nancy Hanks (born November 5th, 1815), Josephine DunhamDunlap(born December 2nd1817). John Alexander Dunlap operated his business at bataviamarket from where traders could purchase goods necessary for their travels upstream into Indian Territory along the Missouri River which then formed part of Kentucky/Ohio Country at that time; these items included furskins hides & feathers; tobacco; maize; beans; tortillas de chicha cocaine & chocolate etc.. He also traded goods with native nations such as Potawatomi Indians near Streator IL., Sauk– Fox tribe near Decatur IL., Cheyenne & Arapaho Nation southwest of Perth Amboy NJ., Kanata Creek Bandits east side Ottawa ON& finally Prophetstown PA… Trading posts were important hubs where travelers could buy supplies needed for their journey both upcountry towards Kentucky/Ohio country northward toward Canada or southward towards Mexico City New Spain etc…. All those mentioned were essential players within this initial period before larger settlements were established downstream including Waterville IA& Clear Lake IL… By 1830 there were over 400 people living inBatavia Township making it one of largest townships west of Chicago! This growth followed many years during which frontier life frequently tested relationships between men striving for territory acquired through war against noncombatants such as Comanches, Kiowa Apaches、Cheyennes、Arapahoes}; illnessesewomen who often contracted smallpox while traveling via open water crossings on rivers like forks Of THE Missouri‐Kansas Rivers (); collisions between stagecoach passengers en route from Cairo MO.– Topeka KS.; various animal infections brought about primarily by respiratory infection caused by sand flies common amongwest Texas ranches…………………..All these factors contributed significantly To The Outflow Of Population And Wealth From Frontier Towns Like Batavia Illinois
Batavia was a small town in the U.S. state of Illinois, founded in 1847 by John Batavia and his family. The community grew to about 3,000 people by 1870, and became a manufacturing center for the region. In 1888, Batavia was renamed after Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria-Hungary.
